  6. I think Percy is getting too comfortable in her life of crime. Now she is stealing my heating pad while I’m using it!

  7. What I say: "I hope you'll drop me a line when your book is published!"

What I mean: "If you don't promise to tell me when it's out, I will be running an internet search for you and your book every couple of weeks for the next year."

I'm rooting for my editing clients. When I tell them I'm excited to see their books out in the world, I mean it.

I'm not sure they realize how much I mean it.

  8. What I want to do is watch the doctor who special

What I am doing is checking the proofs of an article about Bulgarian anti-vaccination discourse

  9. I just spent fifteen minutes digging through boxes—ones I still haven't unpacked from the move—in my underwear to find a particular hard-copy doorstopper dictionary for the current client project and nearly passed out doing so. #EditorLife is SO GLAMOROUS, y'all. #AmEditing

  10. #EditorLife This evening I went through:
    - a study on politeness in online medical consultations
    - a pragmeme analysis of COVID messages in the UK
    - directives on Twitter

  11. I still find it hard to believe that as the editor of Pragmatics & Society, i get to read so much new original research on a weekly basis. The sheer volume of it.

I’ve never been the academic who truly keeps up with the literature - I’ve read things for specific research project, but not generally new issues of every relevant journal. Well, this sure has changed now! 😀

  12. A tedious but still amusing moment in being an editor: Going back through 30 previous books to see if there's a precedent for how to format/style/hyphenate "mindfuck". #EditorLife #AmEditing

  13. Anyone else think better when their hands are busy? 🙋🏻

I read audiobooks while I'm sewing, solving visual puzzles, taking pictures, crafting, and just about anything else that doesn't involve words.

Today that's looking like playing with a new printing process while filling my brain with history and theory of nonbinary identities (in preparation for my ACES VCon talk next month).

  14. Sometimes it's late at night, and you're slogging towards deadline, and your tired, queer ass just desperately needs a really froufy rainbow fruit smoothie explosion thing. 😂

  15. One #book down! Two more to go. But for now, we feast!

Wait, no. I mean nap. For now, we NAP. #AmEditing #EditorLife

  16. Happy Friday, everyone!

It’s been a week since I joined the #Paizo family, and I’m celebrating with a pot of my favorite #GeekGrindCoffee — in its matching mug, of course. 💚 Been while since I’ve had this, but I simply couldn’t resist treating myself.

    Rock on, friends!

  17. Note to reviewers: whenever you are given an MS to review that is a blizzard of numbers and models, or convoluted rhetoric that you do not fully understand. Do not assume that you are the problem. Assume the problem is with the manuscript until proved otherwise. #academia #EditorLife

What is taking so long for you to get a decision back to me on this manuscript?
But don't send rejection letters on weekends. Or Fridays. Or holidays. Or in the evenings. But faster than you are doing it.

  19. "A transformation in scientific publishing to open-ended and stackable publications instead of multiple papers for each research direction."

    Honestly, I appreciate the concept! #Chemiverse #EditorLife nature.com/articles/s41563-023

  20. Just a reminder that calling a study "exploratory" or "pilot" is not an adequate excuse for an inadequate research design. #EditorLife

  22. Blessed are the authors that suggest a large and diverse set of reviewers for their manuscript #EditorLife #Chemiverse

  23. Editing thoughts this morning- peer review should be a helpful, collaborative process whereby the reviews themselves are a part of the conversation--not the be-all and end-all--on how and whether to move forward with a book. It's an editor's responsibility to help new authors understand the role of peer review in academic book publishing, demystify it, and make it seem just a bit less scary.
