  1. #CapeHawthorn aka #WaterHawthorn.
It's native to #SouthAfrica. People there have long cultivated & harvested the buds & flowers as food. It's used to make #WaterblommetjieBredie - a traditional South African stew. The #Afrikaans name of this traditional cultural dish translates to "stew of little water flowers".

It's not a widely known edible water plant here. It's delicious. If you enjoy green beans - you'll probably enjoy eating Cape hawthorn buds/flowers too.

  2. #Cucamelons aka #MouseMelon aka #Pepquinos are easy to grow & do well in PNW areas. Fruits are size of large grapes & they taste like sour cucumbers. Good for pickling. You can eat them raw, like cucumbers. I like dipping them raw into sea salt with some chopped red chili peppers.

It's native range goes from Mexico to Venezuela. Many people grow it in different areas of the world as a food crop.

  3. Found a large patch of my fave early #wildberries to #forage for & eat - #thimbleberries 😀 I look forward to picking them, every Summer!

Thimbleberry aka redcaps is a #NativePlant & #WildFoodSource in PNW areas. It's thornless & good for #rewilding or creating #FoodForests. They're very seedy #fruits are sweet & similar to raspberry taste. They are great raw or cooked.
Their large, soft leaves can be used as natural toilet paper alternative. Leaves, shoots & roots are used by #Indigenous peoples to make #medicinal tea & leaves/roots were also used for burns & acne treatment.

  4. It's the start of #wildberries season on the island 😀 I found a large #IndianPlum bush/tree, filled with #berries. They look like tiny plums, hence their name. You can collect some wild seeds, at end of Summer, to grow in your gardens.

Once established, craftspeople can use their #wood to make self bows & straight shoots made into fine arrows. Wood can also be made into spoons/forks, knitting needles/crochet hooks & combs.

PNW #Indigenous #FirstNations used their bark, twigs & fruits for #food & #medicine sources. Sunnier locations provided larger, sweeter tasting berries.

  5. #TragopogonPorrifolius - Common #Salsify aka vegetable oyster or Jerusalem star.

It's a #wildflower that's fairly easy to grow in loose soil or in deep pots/grow sacks - they have deep & large taproots. Fab addition for #rewilding or as part of a #PollinatorGarden & #EdibleGarden. It takes 2 years from sowing for flowers to develop; first year will only show foliage.

Young shoots are #edible - raw or cooked & taste like asparagus. Their leaves & roots are edible & taste best before plant flowers. The roots have a mild oyster & asparagus taste. Their flower petals & sprouted seeds can be added to salads/sandwiches.

  6. #video showing more of my new #hosta shoots in a pot & #talking about they're native to my cultural roots. My Mom taught me how to cook them. It's a #NativePlant overseas - grows wild in #China #Korea & #Japan - you can buy shoots at some #AsianMarkets in US & Canada if you don't grow any. There's no hosta that's not edible for humans. Hostas are toxic to cats & dogs though.
