  2. “Great balls of fluid!”

…AKA: the story of my hematoma & edema…

My “first” hip surgery of this year happened on June 13th. All went well and I felt like my recovery was going nicely. Until on June 30th my hip decided to make a loud cracking sound. According to mum, I cried out in paint and agony in a way that was heartbreaking and scary… After ± 5 hours, they finally set the leg, but the prosthetic was damaged. The next day, I had an emergency surgery, where they replaced the ball with a bigger one that should fit the new socket better.

All this meant, besides loads of pain, trauma, and anxiety, that the hip area was badly damaged and painful and all that… It took a little while, bit then, the bruised area became so bad, that mum took a snap and we contacted the hospital…

  3. I had to do a lot of city walking yesterday which usually results in Surprise Blisters. I have some KT tape lying around that I can't use for its original purpose (T1D cyborg kit tapedown) so I decided to try to use it as a foot blister preventative since I shouldn't have a skin reaction to it in the foot region.

Good news! It worked really well. Even better news, because of the stretch in the KT tape, when my poor beleaguered feet started swelling from the heat (and my lack of drinking water), I still had blister protection and it didn't feel like a force was acting against the swelling.

I like it better than Moleskin or Tegaderm and am going to have to do some pre-cuts to put in my day pack.

  4. Super Interesting! The recent study with participation of ultra cyclists Jana Kesenheimer and Fiona Kolbinger is available as open-access paper now:

"Exercise-induced fluid retention, cardiac volume overload and peripheral edema in ultra-distance cyclists."
