  1. @Harryslaststand I was privileged to get an invitation to the #EdBroadbent #CelebrationOfLife today. I spotted #HarryLeslieSmith on the tribute video they put together. Shouldn't have been surprised to see them together I guess - he did his "Stand Up for Progress" tour with the @broadbent a few years back.

  2. State funeral for #EdBroadbent tomorrow. I just found out he died.

Politics & politicians sure have changed since his day.

He spoke at a U of C conference I attended. Us worldly undergrads had a fancy wine & cheese after, so I got to chat with him. The bartender asked "Red or white?"
    "Beer," said Ed.
    I said "Make it two."
He was a no BS kinda guy. We talked for a long while, especially after I name-dropped my prof, who I knew was an old friend of his. 🙃

  3. Former NDP leader Ed Broadbent will become the second opposition leader in Canadian history — and the first who did not die while still in office — to be given a state funeral.

"Canada is better off because of Ed Broadbent's selfless service," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a media statement Tuesday. "An advocate for equality and a champion for justice, his commitment to helping others never wavered."

  4. That's sad news indeed, the loss of #EdBroadbent.

His heart always seemed to be in the right place, and he took time to be on the right side of the issues. Not something so common in politics anymore.

  5. This is such sad news. Canada's progressive movement has lost one of its giants, and Canadians have lost one of the most profoundly decent people ever to enter politics.

My condolences to all of my friends and colleagues who worked with Ed and came to know and (inevitably, it seems!) to love him. And thank you to @broadbent for carrying on Ed's legacy. broadbentinstitute.ca/statemen #EdBroadbent #CdnPoli #NDP

  6. Ed Broadbent always struck me as an all-around mensch, but this is what sticks out in my memory. I can’t even tell you how many times I watched this video that summer: youtu.be/V9WCNbRJIrk?si=cfGOZU #cdnpoli #EdBroadbent

  7. Canada has lost a true statesman, as #EdBroadbent has passed away. #Equality #SocialJustice

  8. 1973. A few friends and I in 8th grade went to a high school because someone heard a politician was visiting there.

Never having heard of politics at home, that experience with #EdBroadbent so greatly inspired me, I soon identified as a social democrat.

I would later attend the same church as the Broadbents, and Lucille's gentle compassion showed me that New Democrats were a political home for me.

    RIP, Ed.
