"Nobody has actually built a 1GW data center (to be clear, it’s usually a campus of multiple buildings networked together) yet. There are campuses — such as Stargate Abilene — which promise to reach 1.2GW, but nearly two years in sit at two buildings at around 103MW of critical IT load each with, based on discussions with sources with direct knowledge" #edzitron #datacenters https://www.wheresyoured.at/where-are-all-the-data-centers/

Interviewing Ed Zitron (https://www.wheresyoured.at) or having him on your podcast seems to be such an easy thing for the host. Start with, "So, Ed, whats up?" then listen to him rant uninterrupted for 50 minutes about whatever AI topic has pissed him off today, then end with, "thanks for your time, Ed!".
10/10, could listen to Ed destroy AI all day, every day.

In my 2025 analysis of Microsoft AI products (☝️), I had to pick something for the "good" bucket. So, I picked GitHub Copilot that was at least gaining paying users.
Turns out the pricing model has been so unsustainable that MS now had to pause paid subscriptions in an unprecedented way. Because "success" is costing them too many tokens & the licensing model needs to be changed.

"Today's free newsletter is about four signs that the AI bubble is bursting: Anthropic's services and economics are decaying, AI demand is inflated, more than 50% of data centers under construction are for two companies, and NVIDIA is warehousing $150bn+ of GPUs."

Weird hearing #EdZitron's taking points without the accent or all the cursing.

So I was listening to the most recent episode of Ed Zitron's podcast on my way to work this morning. In it, they touched briefly on the guy who threw a molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's house, and Zitron added a disclaimer that this act was morally reprehensible and wrong.
To which my mind wryly retorted "Yes, but putting morals and ethics aside..."
Anyway, putting morals and ethics aside, here's a link to the episode in question: https://omny.fm/shows/better-offline/more-everything-forever-with-adam-becker

Ed Zitron: The AI Industry Is Lying To You. “Here’s what’s actually happening: data center deals are being funded by eager private credit gargoyles that don’t know shit about fuck. These deals are announced, usually by overly-eager reporters that don’t bother to check whether the previous data centers ever got built, as massive ‘multi-gigawatt deals,’ and then nobody follows up to check […]

From @Zitron
"By giving warmongers and jingoists the cover to 'trust' this 'authoritative' service — whether or not that’s the case, they can simply point to the specious press — the ethical concern of whether or not an attack was ethical or not is now, whenever any western democracy needs it to be, something that can be handed off to Claude, and justified with the cold, logical framing of 'intelligence' and 'data.'
None of this would be possible without the consistent repetition of the falsehoods peddled by #OpenAI and #Anthropic . Without this endless puffery and overstatements about the 'power of AI,' we wouldn’t have armed conflicts dictated by what a chatbot can burp up from the files it’s fed. The deaths that follow will be a direct result of those who choose to continue to lie about what an LLM does."

Ed Zitron is even more angry than usual, which is saying something. I was going to do a swear count on the text but I ran out of decimal places to store the count 😆
He does have some valid points.
