#Taraxacum #officinale (#Cichorieae) is native to Eurasia; it serves as a #pollensource for numerous insects and also is #indicatorplant for #calcium/#potassium. Its parts are relevant #foodsources. In their studies in Armenia B. Babayan et al. (2025) found concentrations of #heavymetals in the #soil leading to #DNApolymorphisms and thus being well-suited as a #bioindicator for #ecotoxicology.

The short documentary 'Parkinson tóxico' (in Spanish, but you can add translated subtitles) reveals the connection between pesticides and Parkinson. It is part of a campaign to recognize pesticide-derived Parkinson, one of worlds quickest growing neurodegenerative diseases, as a workplace hazard for farmers and fieldworkers (and of course, to reduce pesticide use).

We need to be critical with toxicological safety levels.

Apart from the ovious political fight and influence by lobbies, there are way too few large-scale toxicological studies that assess multiple toxics, interactions with lifestyle, toxicity of degradation products and long-term effects on human health (reproductive health, endocrine disruptors, gut microbiome etc...) and the environment (yeah, complex topic, I know. But maybe a little bit of cautionary principle?).

We are filling ourselves with toxic shit just because some funds manager can report higher benefits to the already obscenely rich shareholders.

[that said, it's obviously an embarrassment for the authors of the study, but shit happens. I fully agree with their take that the overall conclusions remain: "an order of magnitude lower" sounds like "bah, in reality that's nothing", but the plastic kitchen utensils are by far the only source of toxic contamintants. And the highlighting of the recycling pathway for the pollution of household products is correct. Since we are luckily starting to recycle more stuff, we have to face this problem. Latest paper out led by PhD student Georgia Sinclair, "Is substrate choice an overlooked variable in #ecotoxicology experiments?" looks at the issue of substrate choice for toxicology experiments. By measuring small molecule metabolites (#metabolomics) we show that the metabolic effects of #contaminants on organisms can vary by substrate even when using artificial, clean material.

#Introduction

I'm a retired professor of #biology who has recently become interested in how #misinformation is eroding trust in science and undermining important initiatives in #environment, #pollution, and #ClimateChange. I taught courses in #biodiversity, #animal physiology, and #aquatic #ecotoxicology. My time these days is mostly invested in #writing.

Looking forward to meeting a broad range of scientists here, esp. those interested in public #outreach.
