"Europe is falling behind the US and China." The frustration is boiling over. 🇪🇺⚠️
Commission President von der Leyen runs a hyper-centralized power system. Her small, overworked team makes the calls. Others feel sidelined.
Result? Slow progress on competitiveness. Single market reforms delayed. Even Germany is pushing back.
Europe's anxiety is real. The gap is widening.

The 2023 #EdelmanTrustBarometer is the firm’s 23rd annual #trust and #credibility survey. The 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer online survey sampled more than 32,000 respondents across 28 countries. A lack of faith in societal institutions triggered by #EconomicAnxiety, #disinformation, mass #ClassDivide and a #failure of #leadership has brought us to where we are today – deeply and dangerously #polarized. https://www.edelman.be/sites/g/files/aatuss331/files/2023-03/2023%20Edelman%20Trust%20Barometer%20Global%20Report%20Region_EUROPE_FINAL_WEBSITE.pdf #poverty #ecomony #government #politics #society #media #polarization

Americans are exceptionally anxious about their political system, new Gallup polling shows
About ⅓ of Americans rated politics & government as the top issue facing their nation, behind only Taiwan — which faces the prospect of an invasion from China.
Wealthier countries are more likely to list politics as a top issue, as are democracies. But the US stands out as a country that’s particularly concerned about the stability of its democratic system and whether it’s still possible to get ahead economically.
Economic anxiety is linked to the health of democratic systems, according to Brendan Nyhan, a Dartmouth political scientist. “A world where people aren’t optimistic about their economic futures is one in which they’re willing to destabilize institutions even further,” Nyhan said.
Americans 35 and under are most likely to list economic issues — including the affordability of food and shelter — as a top issue.

I have the amount of my monthly natural gas bill easily accessible going back to 2012.
This is what the great Trump economy has done to my gas bill.
It usually peaks in February or March so this isn't even the worst of it.

Why did most white people vote for Trump? Today I see lots of people saying it was "economic anxiety"

What's REALLY driving Trump supporters:
"the late 20th-century revolution in social values: the end of segregation, mass nonwhite immigration, feminist challenges to patriarchy, a decline in traditional Christianity, and the rise of the LGBTQ movement."
They refuse to accept this and the way in which it dethrones them, as white Christian Americans, from their power perch.

Zack Beauchamp notes that though the canard of "economic anxiety makes them do it" — support Trump, that is — has been thoroughly debunked, no less than David Brooks at his New York Times bully pulpit keeps pushing it. Because it makes us feel comfortable. it exonerates Trump supporters, while facing the reality of what is really motivating them does not comfort us.
