Here is a paper establishing the astonishing #inequality level concerning #CO2emissions in #Germany:

"The results show a distinct inequality in emission #responsibilities along the net #wealth distribution. The top 10% are responsible for 66% of total wealth-related emissions and hold 62% of the total net wealth in Germany in 2019. Simulations of sectoral differences in emission intensity show a band around these estimates ranging from 38% to 94% of total emissions, and a random sectoral portfolio allocation using bootstrapping finds an emissions share of the top 10% of 66.5%. Wealth-related emissions are thus not only substantially more unequally distributed than emissions distributed by income or consumption, but also even more unequally distributed than wealth."

R.U. Ayres has continued much of Georgescu-Roegen's work, and Australian economist Steve Keen has proposed an economic production function which adds energy to the traditional capital and labour to far more accurately describe economic growth. (Virtually all the "Solow Residual", the "unexplained" growth in the traditional capital + labour model is accounted for when energy is taken into consideration -> "technology" is in fact more effective energy utilisation.)

"Make nature investable" has crept into policy as if self-evident. It's a category error.

Ecosystems are public goods that markets can't price. Carbon markets reward pine monocultures over old-growth forest; biomass sells easier than complexity.

Europe rebuilt forests through regulation; the US built parks by taking land off the market. Australia's Senate just voted down a 25% gas export tax worth $17bn/year. Not a shortfall. A choice.

Im Wien Museum ist gerade die Ausstellung Eisenbeton. Anatomie einer Metropole zu sehen. Thema sind Stahlbeton- oder Eisenbeton-Skelettbauten1 der frühen Wiener Moderne. Am vorletzten Sonntag haben Ana und ich die Ausstellung besucht. Ich habe den Besuch mit dem Material, das ich online dazu gefunden habe (u.a. einem Podcast mit den Ausstellungsmacher:innen, Karr, 2025) und mit dem ausgezeichneten, umfassenden Ausstellungskatalog nachbereitet (Kapfinger, 2025a). Mich interessiert, wie die Ausstellung vor dem Hintergrund der Theorien des sozialen Metabolismus zu verstehen ist, mit denen ich mich seit einiger Zeit beschäftige. Kann man – und wie kann man – eine Verbindung zwischen dem lokalen Prozess des Durchbruchs des Eisenbeton-Baus in Wien und dem globalen Übergang vom agrarischen zum fossil-industriellen Metabolismus herstellen? Und lässt sich die hochkultivierte, über Jahrzehnte in Wien entwickelte Herangehensweise an die Baugeschichte der Stadt, wie sie in dieser Ausstellung und ihrem Katalog zum Ausdruck kommt, mit den Perspektiven verbinden, für die das Wiener Institut für Soziale Ökologie eine internationale Vorreiter-Rolle spielt?

When should growth stop?

Politicians and economists are forever discussing how to get ‘growth’.

Ask them this: “When should growth end? When cities have joined up into one continuous conurbation? When world population reaches 10 billion or 20 or 50? When there are no wild spaces for nature left?"

As the graphic shows, perpetual exponential growth is impossible. The only choice is stop or get stopped.

"The literature on degrowth routinely argues (appropriately so) that the global north rather than the global south must be the target for change, but it may well be that the vanguard for degrowth resides, paradoxically, in the global south. It may be that subconscious bias causes us to believe that the global south must catch up with the economic production of the wealthiest states, rather than encouraging us to imagine that the wealthy states need to catch up to the level of consciousness displayed by the most radical societies in the global south."
