Bye everyone! Had a great time at #ECIR2026 and am looking forward to South Hampton in 2027, or, who knows, Melbourne this "summer", or even sooner, in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Nijmegen, etc
Feeling inspired!

Jimmy Lin 🪄 sharing his ongoing (agentic?) loop between 🤯 and 🤷♂️ state of mind wrt coding and GenAI.
Reproducibility, yes, but for who? For our students, or for our students' coding agents?
Will teaching class just become sharing the SKILL.md file? Do we only need to teach high level concepts? ("But who tells you not to use -J in trec_eval to increase your NDCG@10"?!)
Interesting discussion!

@djoerd wrapping up the IRRJ (pronounced by some as "urge") session emphasizing the importance of Diamond Open Access, reminding us that you can also present your paper at FIRE (in December), the work behind the scenes to get the journal included in established databases, and, most importantly, a huge thank you to the editors.
Hurray for Djoerd!

Tetsuya presents us a series of early easter eggs from the evaluation literature: metrics, user models, etc
Eg, did you know Van Rijsbergen introduced E not F in his books?!

Hello if you think this expression on my face is mischief and provocation you would be correct. Having an absolute blast at #ECIR2026 #IR4Good - thank you for letting me show up to to talk about how important (good) IR is for global democracies!

Mohanna Hoveyda presenting our work on the Oracle and the Logician, OrLog, where the LLM provides plausibility estimates for clauses in an (auto generated) Probabilistic Prolog program that will produce the answer to complex entity queries.
The approach seperates reasoning from the LLM. It is not only more effective for eg queries with disjunctions and negations, but also more efficient, using much less tokens than a Reasoning LLM.

Two #ECIR2026 keynote presentations by researchers from Microsoft at the European Conference on Information Retrieval. They could not have been much more different. Today, Madeleine Daepp, who also works for Public Democracy America, discussed the challenges that generative AI poses for democracies around the world. Very important. Very inspiring.

"Gemini lies on top of the search results rankings"
My main take-away from 2nd #ECIR2026 keynote titled "Gemini Hegemony".
And, that we **must** find wars to unravel and disarm the effects of GenAI manipulations in context of Naomi Klein's shock doctrine.
(Those sleeping in today, you miss out!)
-
Djoerd's talk naturally led into the panel closing the IR for Good sessions today.
Moderator Maria Heuse and panelists Bhaskar Mitra, Sanne Vrijenhoek, Madeleine I. G. Daepp, and Djoerd Hiemstra; left to right in the photo attached.
Highlights include:
Bring #openwebsearch not just to EU but to the world
Stimulate critical thinking regarding AI.
Reflect on the implicit normative view (what is "good")?
Keep authoritarian frames out of our platform (avoid *autocratic capture*).
-
@djoerd Second goal: Web search should be a collaborative effort.
Draws an analogy to car industry, where many brands share the same "platform" (the car body).
Just like OWS.EU does this!
Third goal:
We need open standards for Web search "production lines".Challenges to continue to work on include tokenization, index representation and standards.
