💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🦇🧠 A 2021 study found #blind and sighted people can learn click #echolocation in just 10 weeks.
Follow up scans by #Durham University researchers showed structural changes in the #brain’s visual cortex. A separate 2025 study examined how 30 million years of echolocation #evolution shaped dolphin and whale brains.

A blind woman reached out and touched a tree she couldn’t see. She’d ‘heard’ it standing there.

🐬🇧🇷 Biologist Vera da Silva and researchers at #Brazil’s Mamirauá Institute study the pink #boto, a #freshwater #dolphin that swims backward and upside down.
These 2.5-meter-long #mammals use #echolocation to hunt #fish among submerged tree roots. While biologically successful for millennia, they now face threats from #hunting and #pollution.

#Echolocation tells absolute distances whereas the #AI depth view only gives relative distances (depth order), but still with supplemental absolute depth cues from changes in apparent size when moving to and fro, as well as effects of visual parallax when moving sideways.

#Icaronycteris is an extinct genus of microchiropteran (echolocating) bat scene for the 21st century but look closely and youll see some differences for example that bat has a simple rounded face while most modern #bATs have noses and ears speciALized for #echolocation

🦇🤖 To learn how #bats find tiny #insects on leaves in a crowded #jungle, researchers built a specialized #robot that uses #echolocation just like the real thing.
The experiments with the "robo-bat" arm showed that these #animals don't need complex maps of every leaf. Instead, they use a surprisingly simple and elegant acoustic trick to identify their next meal in total darkness.

Dogbane tiger moth (Cycnia tenera). Like others in the subfamily (Arctiinae), they can jam bat sonar by making high-frequency chirps. I'm not sure of specifics but apparently bats can adjust their sound production to become unjammed. And no doubt, moths have additional countermeasures to deploy. #dogbane #moth #moths #lepidoptera #evolution #insects #nature #bats #echolocation

Bats' echolocation strategy: How dense colonies avoid mid-air collisions
https://phys.org/news/2025-03-echolocation-strategy-dense-colonies-mid.html paper: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2407810122"When exiting the cave, #bats experience a cacophony of calls, with 94% of echolocations being jammed. Yet, within five seconds of leaving the cave, bats significantly reduced the #echolocation jamming... they fanned out and they emitted shorter and weaker calls at higher frequency... to gain detailed information about their near neighbors... to avoid collisions."
