  1. 🗓️ Mark your calendars, folks! We have an exclusive sneak peek into the future: a niche corner of the internet will be closing its doors in October 2026! 🚪🔒 Apparently, maintaining a digital echo chamber full of spam, bots, and bickering users isn’t as glamorous as it sounds—who knew? 🙄🤷‍♂️

  2. Them: You’re either security or you’re IT, pick a lane.
Me: In large organizations where security has the luxury of being a dedicated role rather than an IT function, sure.

    …and blocked.

If you don’t want to have a conversation, don’t post stuff that’s going to generate one. Then again, this was on #LinkedIn where an #EchoChamber is a common form of self promotion.

  3. [en] Americans more willing to engage with opposing opinions than generally presumed

"Listening to someone who disagrees with you on a #controversial topic, but shares basic values, might not change your mind – but it could moderate an extreme position, reducing #polarization …"

Prof. Michèle #Belot: "The question is whether people are then willing to engage with what they hear. Promoting common values is not a miracle cure, but our evidence indicates people being more willing to reconsider their views if they know the other person shares common values."

"The main experiment surveyed a representative sample of roughly 2,500 Americans, soliciting views on three divisive issues: #abortion, #gun laws and #immigration ...

A short video of how Social Media now only gives you what they know you will like and how the world has changed.

    Some interesting quotes:

    - Maybe your real job is shopping. The true factories of our time are the shopping malls.

    - Politicians have become pantomime villains

    - But you are cool, and there is more out there.

  6. Ah, the digital age's #Sisyphus has spoken! 🤖 Apparently, this brave soul has discovered that the best audience is an army of tireless, unsleeping bots… because who needs human readers when you can have a #spammy echo chamber? 🎉 Bravo, truly a #masterpiece of relevance in the attention economy.

Yes, if you're looking for popularity or engagement over on the Fediverse, that clearly isn't going to formulate.

The Fediverse is the place where all the usual bullshit isn't propagated as is on mainstream social media.

The Fediverse is a reimagination, and a refreshing alternative to that.

Besides, all the mainstream social media networks are THE DEFINITION of the biggest echo chambers in human existence till date.

  8. Bashing vs. Building

I have been on Medium since 2019. Medium is, more or less, a left-wing echo chamber.

I have written about 700 articles for Medium. Most are about building a new democracy. But occasionally, I get into articles bashing the current system and its actors.

My bashing articles do much better than my building articles. Why is that?

  9. A wonderful text by @onepict

»We will not help you steal others work, or enable genocides by using the companies that provide the infrastructure for governments to do harms to their peoples. We won't be polite to the people that allow the sloppy auto correct to cause extra work in an already overloaded technical community.

We will judge you. Which is what you fear really. Being an outcast and not being welcome in our spaces. The spaces we had to build for our safety.

You're not welcome here. You have plenty of other spaces online to peddle this. Leave our spaces alone.«

  10. I don't think folks consider freedom of association enough when we look at why defederation and moderation is such an important part of the #fediverse

It's not just free speech. We have the right to assemble and to refuse to be welcoming in our spaces.

So no, we aren't welcoming to #LLM tech bro's on here.

"We're the echo that's left and we don't want to reflect your narcissism."

@artemis "[...] if you don't like it when people are picky about who they associate with & how [...]"

This is 100% on the money for me.

I feel like some of the vocal folks about #echochamber miss the fact that not everybody might like their social network as a mall of some loud prophets, but rather as bazaars or pubs - fine community garnerings come in many forms, after all.

  12. CW: Long post about echo chamber

It seems that echo chamber is the key phrase of the day. Here's my take

Personally, I left Twitter because it was full of bullying and celebrity/influencer worship. I didn't fit in, and felt very uncomfortable.

I left Facebook when my friends and families posts started disappearing and an algorithm started feeding me things I should have interest in.

I haven't used any other social media, except the Fediverse where I have been accepted and feel comfortable, even though my introverted nature sometimes tells me to stop interacting and go back to lurking like on Twitter.

As social media goes, I have found a happy place. I follow what I want, block what I don't, and am really happy with the moderation of aus.social admins. Is it an echo chamber? To be honest, I don't care. I'm not going to the pub with a bunch of people I don't like the opinion of, and that's how I think of the Fediverse, a social environment, rather than a soapbox.

Anyway, I'll go back to talking about chess, and posting photos of Tasmania and cats. And thanks to all of you who happily tolerate me 🙂

  13. Unrealistically confident leaders love an echo chamber.. They surround themselves with a small group of weak advisors who will nod their heads in agreement and support any wacky idea proposed. 🤐 #EchoChamber #Management

  14. If I assume that the echo chamber wasn’t some kind of accidental byproduct, but rather a deliberate cultural form, a design...

Is AI then simply the next stage in the evolution of echo chamber?

    A fully individualized stage.
AI - a solitary echo chamber.

You can #EchoChamber and #PeopleYouDisagreeWith somewhere else. We're immune to that shit over here.

  17. @draNgNon thanks, some very good food for thought.

I think the crucial point is that we do not know and do not offer proper ways to deal with different modes of communication, esp. if the only medium channel constitutes a stream of sticky notes, such as we have here in this #microblogging space.

On the first point, when is something an #EchoChamber vs. a healthy interest area, I think depends how well one is able to cross the 'membranes' of all the various social contexts and information spaces one navigates online, as it were.

There should be a place for 'influencing' to an extent if only to reach your crowd and build community and such. But all in balance and proportion and clear social context preferably. Non-profits and #activist groups want to influence, we may want to be informed.

To the last point. There's urgency to address the dark world situation, and either organize or lose. #SX defines #CALMculture as a way to engage in constructive #activism..
