  1. First time growing sweet potatoes!
Saw slips for sale and couldn't resist, even though it's still frosty at night here.
    🥶

So....how long can I keep these slips in a jar of water? I need 2 weeks to heat the soil with black plastic. Will the slips last that long?

  2. Silverberry (ölweide - eleagnus) harvest - two of the three different edible sorts carried this year despite starting the year as baby plants. Next year should

Their berry taste is quite different (a bit sour but good so), and have a massive seed, which you can eat, but I wouldn’t want to process into a jam. So, experimenting with a juice/syrup thing.

  3. My too-many jalapenos are heat-stressed, as are most of the other peppers. Had a feeling they were about to drop all their fruits, so I picked everything that was big enough to use...

This is a whole lot of peppers and chiles.

Also, mulling over how to do a better shade cloth structure over them. At present, our camping screen house is providing some shelter.

I'm hoping there's some of those sunchokes you gave me among all these weeds!
And also hoping they can stand a lot of competition!

  5. 26 Jersey Knight asparagus crowns planted! They look weirdly like sea creatures, squid or jellyfish.

Sheet composting didn't work too well here. The plant material decomposed but the paper didn't. Cardboard looked brand new, didn't break down at all.

I've been more optimistic about garden soil than I am with this plot, tbh. Onward!

  6. Happy little hopeful sprouts 🌱

Oregano, thyme came up much faster than expected. Our unheated sunroom makes a tolerable cold frame.

Sprouting peas and some kind of mustard or tatsoi. Labels washed off the containers

  7. Growing #okra :

What's the minimum number of plants you find worthwhile to grow?

IMO okra is like green beans, in that there's no point in growing it unless you have enough plants to produce enough to cook in batches.

    But what's that minimum?

Planning how many seedlings to start, once it's time to start them

  8. @gardening A day without frost, just right to harvest a handful of the Brussel sprouts. And since we can't garden outdoors right now, we are sprouting indoors.

  9. Ordering asparagus crowns soon, and wondering which variety to choose.

Particularly uncertain about ratio of male to female plants or all male cultivars. Is there a plus having female plants?

    Also, purple vs green?

I'm USDA zone 6a, sandy soil heavily amended with compost.

  10. Wrapping up the garden after 2024’s extreme heat, rain, storms, and floods?

A DIY design to make 2025 different.
I'm a pro, but you can do this!

  11. @gardening First and last broccoli of this gardening year. I am surprised we had one at all. We ate it with great delight in a vegetable stir fry.

I planted quite the variety of crucifers this year, mainly sprouting broccoli, Tuscan style kale and Brussel sprouts. I know the sprouting broccoli survives German winters, but will the ordinary broccoli plants survive as well? Hoping for a few more sprout harvests...

  12. We have reached the stage of "you are not allowed to buy tomatoes/cucumbers/peppers/chilies/cucumbers/salads/leeks/chard..." for people in this household cause we have plenty from #ShoppingTheGarden.

I pick the flesh tomatoes prematurely to ripen on the counter and allow speeding up ripening of the remaining green fruit on the plant.
