"...Working side by side with National Weather Service officials, an emergency management staffer around 4:30 p.m. had called for a cellphone blast across the Interstate 210 corridor — a stretch of foothill communities that includes Sylmar, Altadena and Sierra Madre — to warn people that they needed to prepare for dangerous winds. Even if a fire didn’t spark, trucks could topple. Limbs would certainly come down. Power lines could endanger residents. And if a spark did catch, it could quickly mirror the inferno that was engulfing Pacific Palisades, or worse.
It’s not clear what difference a prefire preparedness alert sent to residents before the Eaton fire would have made. But it could have added another element of urgency as perilous fire weather was beginning to overwhelm the region. ..."

"...Emergency officials decided against sending a preparedness alert about increasingly dangerous winds across the Interstate 210 corridor before the Eaton fire ignited.
It’s not clear what difference such a preparedness alert would have made, but an emergency management official who pushed for the alert thinks it could have helped, especially in west Altadena, where residents didn’t receive any alerts until after the fire had been threatening the area for hours...."

Enjoyed last night. Local friends Shanti and Martha had us over to their evacuation house, they are finalizing things to move home after #eatonfire. we brought Thai food and they bought nonsense pizza (bulgogi beef and such). Everyone had a good dinner, kids played together on various computer games, and then after dinner I played nonsense improv on their grand piano, and shanti demoed various sheet music he enjoyed studying while my wife and Martha talked... we had to drag kids away at 10:30

"...Through Governor Newsom’s expansion of the state’s CalAssist mortgage relief program, disaster-affected homeowners now qualify for up to 12 months of mortgage assistance, a four-fold increase from the previous three-month limit, with support available up to $100,000.
As part of the state’s ongoing recovery efforts, the expanded program, announced February 12, provides greater financial relief to eligible homeowners impacted by the 2025 LA fires and other qualifying disasters. Homeowners who previously received three months of assistance may qualify for additional support, bringing total relief to a full year.
The program now covers up to $100,000 in total assistance, up from $20,000, with payments made directly to mortgage servicers...."

LA Times: California launches civil rights probe into botched evacuations in historically Black Altadena
"More than a year after the devastating Eaton fire — and following months of mounting pressure from survivors — California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta has opened a civil rights investigation into the fire preparations and response, looking particularly at potential disparities in historically Black west Altadena.
“My office will be investigating whether there was race, age, or disability discrimination in the emergency response in west Altadena,” Bonta said Thursday. “Specifically, we’ll be looking at whether the systems and structures at play contributed to a delay in the county’s evacuation notice.” "

Attorney General Bonta Announces Investigation into Eaton Fire Emergency Response in West Altadena
LOS ANGELES — California Attorney General Bonta today formally announced the commencement of an investigation by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) related to the emergency response to the Eaton Fire. Specifically, the investigation will seek to determine whether there was potential race, age, or disability discrimination in the emergency preparations and response in the historically Black community of West Altadena. The Eaton Fire burned 14,021 acres, killing at least 19 people, destroying over 9,000 buildings, and becoming one of the deadliest fires in California history. I just came to pick up Greek food at Nancy's and Leo Bulgarini of Bulgarini's Gelato and Italian restaurant was here getting ready to open next week. you can bet we will be coming to get Gelato next week, and also now my kids will be signing up for the cooking classes he teaches in the summer. Hes a real mensch, and a local treasure of authentic Italian cuisine.

When I see this, all I can think about was there was a chance to build things back accessibly and abled people fucked that up again (because the spaces that make these decisions are almost always devoid of disabled decisionmakers).

I hate it when TV news covers stories like this for clicks, but doesn't actually link to the fundraiser.
This man saved his neighbors' homes during the #EatonFire, then died of cancer. It sounds like he had cancer in remission, but breathing in all the stuff from the fire may have brought it back.
Anyway, his surviving partner needs help with funeral and memorial expenses.
