TITLE: Opinion: The next DSM should address the algorithm’s role in eating disorders

    URL: statnews.com/2026/09/02/dsm-6-

This fall, clinicians and researchers around the world will gather at conferences to discuss the future of psychiatric care, including the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), expected in 2030.

It will be the first revision since 2013, when TikTok didn’t exist and generative AI wasn’t a source of health information. That same year, Facebook retired its old ranking system and moved to a machine learning model built to predict what would keep someone scrolling. The way algorithms now shape how people think about food, their bodies, and themselves would have seemed like science fiction in 2013.

TITLE: Can reclassifying muscle dysmorphia unlock better care for boys and men?

    URL: statnews.com/2026/08/20/reclas

Males make up about a third of the population struggling with eating disorders in the United States. While these conditions often start during the teen years, by some estimates, as many as 14% of American men experience an eating disorder by age 40, and they may be more likely to die from it than women. Yet, recognition of this mental illness is not where it should be according to male eating disorder expert Jason Nagata.

This is especially true for muscle dysmorphia, he says, a disorder that overwhelmingly affects males and is characterized by a hyperfixation on building muscles. It is categorized under obsessive-compulsive and related disorders in the diagnostic manual for psychiatric illnesses, known as the DSM, though it frequently also involves extreme dieting.

Therapy actually wasn't a shit show.

I wanted to talk about the anxiety I was feeling about visiting Greg in January, particularly around food and body image. It's something that I noticed last time I visited - his wife does keto and is very strict about it, and I found that was triggering for me and raising all these fears and anxieties that he would see what I was eating and judge me for that.

We talked about how I can feel the dissonance between what I believe with my logical thoughts and what deep wounds I was carrying from childhood.

We talked about things I can do more short term to help make sure I enjoy my time with Greg, and then also made plans to start EMDR when I get back to reprocess some of the trauma I carry around food and my body.
