Today in birding news: the junior towhee's tail has taken on its adult look: we have a boy! (but the rest of him is still brown.) He showed up early to the birdfeeder today; dad came by to check on him when he didn't come home after 20 minutes.

Junior and dad have now left the feeding area. I suspect words about checking back in and coming home as planned are being had in private somewhere...

In other news, I've been using the REAL #BirdApp -- #Merlin from Cornell Labs. So far, I've identified #HouseWren, #AmericanRobins, #NorthernCardinal, #TuftedTitmouse, #PurpleFinch, #EasternTowhee and #RedEyedVireo -- just from my backyard! Some of them are migratory. Will post more about them soon. The #AmericanRobin is nesting next to the house, so that one comes up a lot.

Towhee Amidst the Brush

I came across this photo of a bird I didn't know that I had. It is an eastern towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus). Unfortunately, the photo isn't all that clear, but it's the only one I have of one of these birds, so it makes the show and tell cut.

"A strikingly marked, oversized sparrow of the East, feathered in bold black and warm reddish-browns – if you can get a clear look at it. Eastern Towhees are birds of the undergrowth, where their rummaging makes far more noise than you would expect for their size. Their chewink calls let you know how common they are, but many of your sightings end up mere glimpses through tangles of little stems." - allaboutbirds.org

A rare moment with an Eastern Towhee and a Wood Thrush in the same shot.

I only have a few photos of Wood Thrushes and so often my Towhee pictures are blurry as they busily scratch the ground. It's not the clearest shot but I still love it.

I was thrilled to spot this Eastern Towhee singing it's heart out in the Ash Tree in Guelph Ontario Canada as it was only my second time seeing one. It is strikingly beautiful with bold colors of rufous, sooty black and white.
