  1. For folks into bluebirds, my bluebird mentor shared this on a recent committee meeting, and it's super helpful. I'd love a printed and laminated copy, maybe someday.

  2. Being in the Bluebird business is not for the faint of heart. I don’t know what’s wrong with this neighborhood, but both boxes have nonstop house sparrow nests.

And while I don’t love it, we are a “trap and dispatch” household. Close to two dozen in under two months.

  3. Blue Companions

Here is an Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) pair. The larger bluebird on the right is an adult male, and to his left is a juvenile bluebird.

  4. Today @Jillianmarisa and I made it back out to the park to check in on the boxes. 2/5 have eggs 🥰. The rest are occupied by (so far) not aggressive wasps.

Yay conservation results in action. So happy!

  5. "Three Eastern Bluebirds On A Cold Winter Day" ... my newest add to my website captured in the winter of 2019 of the sweetest little Eastern Bluebirds. We've been looking for their return all winter, but no luck. Still hoping a couple will find our nesting box sometime during the season and set up house ... fingers crossed because I sure miss them!!

  6. For over a year we’ve been working with a nonprofit partner to provide and place bluebird boxes at one of their properties. Last week I got our first five installed, and today we went to check on them. 2/5 already have fully built nests. 🥰

  7. Here in the ‘burbs I prefer the “two holer” boxes. It gives the bluebirds a chance to defend themselves and their nests when the house sparrows attack.

If the HOSP setup shop first I plug the far hole, place a small screw, hang the van ert and wait. When a bird plops down the spring slaps the hole closed. Weekends only. It’s illegal to hold native birds if you catch them on accident.

  8. Both bluebird nestboxes have been taken over by invasive house sparrows. I love being a bird landlord, but I hate the “management” of the bad guys. I used to be a live-let-live kinda guy. But they actively compete with the natives which are in steep decline.

    Time to find my VanErtTraps…

  9. Muted Majesty

Here is an eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis). The photo isn’t perfect, but there’s something appealing about its softness—I had to take it through my storm door at an angle. Still, it’s the first bluebird I’ve ever seen in my backyard. He’s perched on top of a seed feeder, with another feeder nearby stocked with mealworms … yum.

  10. If you are looking for a distraction, or just wholesome anecdotes detailing the entirety of our first bluebird experience, the thread is below. I hope to make a similar thread this year. Last year was a success, but very disjointed and poorly documented.

  11. Yesterday @Jillianmarisa and I installed new bluebird boxes here at #DisOldHouse. We had a lot of fun with bluebirds at the old place, and this place is loads better (I think) for them.

This morning while tending the chickens I spotted a fella already checking out the back one. Squeee!

  14. Good morning. ☕☕☕

    14 December 2025

I look out my office window and my first thought is, “don’t go out there.” The sky is gray, and nothing is moving—not even a mouse. 😂 It’s 42°F, not terribly cold yet, but there’s a freeze warning for tonight. The forecast says it will drop to 26°F.

In the Army and Marines, when stationed in places where the cold was brutal, they issued a pair of boots we called Mickey Mouse boots. Heavily insulated, they looked like cartoon feet—big, rounded, and clumsy. They were meant for survival in extreme cold, but the warning always came with them: don’t wear them too much. If you did, your feet would sweat, and that trapped moisture could turn against you, causing cold-weather injuries.

Still, they had their place. If you were standing guard at an ammunition depot in the middle of nowhere—say, on Mount Fuji in the snow—they were a blessing. But they weren’t recommended for road marching. Infantrymen rarely carried them anyway. When you walk everywhere, you become selective about what goes in your pack. Niceties don’t make the cut—only essentials.

Back to the present: cold weather has its own paradox. Snow is beautiful when seen from a heated room through a window. But if you have to live in it for days or weeks, beauty gives way to endurance. In those moments, finding someplace warm—even for a few minutes—feels like a rare and sovereign gift.

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” — John Steinbeck

“When you see someone putting on his Big Boots, you can be pretty sure that an Adventure is going to happen.” — A. A. Milne

“Welcome, winter. Your late dawns and chilled breath make me lazy, but I love you nonetheless.” — Terri Guillemets

  15. A Bluebird View

This Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) was perched at the top of a tall sweetgum tree. I usually spot them on the powerlines, so seeing one up high in the canopy felt like a quiet surprise.

  16. Favorite Perch

I usually spot Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) perched along the powerlines near my home—though elsewhere, they favor fences and fence posts. This particular bluebird is a male, and he sees me coming. I sometimes approach perched birds in stages: snap a photo, take a few steps closer, snap again—rinse and repeat—until I’m close enough, or they decide it’s time to fly. That morning, there were three bluebirds on the line. When I got too close, they didn’t flee outright—just shifted a little farther down the wire, keeping their distance but staying in view.

  18. Perched Between Worlds

On our walk this morning, I was hoping to spot the pair of red-tailed hawks I saw a while back—but no such luck. Instead, I crossed paths with a smaller predator: an Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis), perched and scanning the countryside with quiet intensity.
