  1. The BoM are so cash strapped that they’ve got a kiwi to do the forecasting.

  3. Woke up this morning to find these scenes waiting for us.
Quite surprised to see snow still on the ground.

I would love to go up the road and poke around in it but we can't get out.

  4. We have not had 43mm in one day before.

And I don't think I've seen the creek quite this high before.

We'll be telling our great grandkids about this event for many millenia to come 😉.

  5. We have snow on the hill behind us 😳

And it is sleeting here. We are at 500m elevation.

    The horses are very unimpressed.

  6. Aaand things keep getting better.

The New England is now closed from the Moonbi hills due to snow.

It's 3⁰ here and falling. 35mm of rain so far. Rivers across the region are set for moderate flooding tonight.

  7. Roads are closing.

The Oxley highway is closed to Walcha. It looks like 10 to 15cm of snow on the ground.

The New England highway has closed south of Uralla with 5cm on the ground.

Flood warnings for local and coastal rivers are in full swing.

  8. I need to make some origami boats so I can race them down the driveway.

I might even do some online gambling for them and see if I can make some money.

  9. Hi Neverland

It's lunchtime on Saturday and we are halfway (?) through this rain event.
We won't be receiving visitors today, or tomorrow.

Everywhere you look there is moving water. The horses are reviewing their #SwimmingLessons and I am checking our stocks of floaties for those that can't.

Thank dog I have enough Jack Daniels and red wine.

  10. I had a letter published in the Newcastle Herald today:

    Explosive information

Shane Tull wonders about the expression 'bomb cyclone' used to describe the second east-coast low to hit us in about a month ("Cool-headed Des Hart was the bomb", Letters, 4/7)

I, too, had never heard the term, so I looked it up.

Turns out it's not a 'sensationalised' term, but a long-standing meteorological term applied to a low that brings "a pressure drop of at least 15 hectopascals (hPa) in 24 hours".
The recent event brought a 24hPa drop, although the Hunter missed the worst of the weather.

This process is called 'explosive cyclogenesis', also known as 'explosive bombogenesis' and sometimes referred to as a 'bomb low' or 'bomb cyclone', Weatherzone says.

Insurance bodies warn that extreme weather is becoming more common, bringing more and more claims and higher premiums for all of us, not to mention measurable hits to our economy for each event.

We know how to minimise this.

We need to stop burning fossil fuels, and that is happening anyway because our old coal generators are falling apart and are not economical to replace.

Clean renewables with storage are the fastest and cheapest replacement, no matter how loudly the climate denialists scream.

  11. New South Wales coastal peeps, how are you going with the #eastcoastlow?

  12. I just checked the Ausgrid power outages website, out of curiosity, not because I've been impacted, and wow!
I feel like I might be in the one tiny area that's *not* affected. 🤯
