#VEDay 'we remember' Please note : The #memorial to 'the fallen' commemorating the cost borne by the men, women and children of the #USSR is in #TreptowerPark in the former #EastBerlin. It is visited everyday by many and kept immaculate. I paid my respects and wept. Indeed "we remember" #Solidarity ✊

Punk in the GDR

Photography by Harald Hauswald who recorded life in East Germany in the 70s and 80s - including those who were rebelling against the norm.

"For me, taking photographs that the GDR authorities did not like was a kind of inner liberation. To not be able to travel freely when you’re young is very depressing. Taking photographs was the work I did to fight against that feeling. A kind of tit for tat. If you hurt me, I hurt you."

The same thread reminded me of reading about #EastBerlin's 1973 World Festival of Youth and Students, with its 8 million visitors, which by all accounts was lit: "the #GDR capital, turned upside down for nine days".

Suddenly stuff was possible that was normally not allowed in the #DDR - though the Stasi was mingling to steer conversations the right way when they got heated:

The correct answer is the #GlienickeBridge. (aka #Bridge of #Spies)

Whilst #GaryPowers and #RudolphAbel were probably better known to the public, #FredericPryor, who had been previously arrested in #EastBerlin, also formed part of the overall swap.

Pryor was released at #CheckpointCharlie in #Berlin, which, once confirmed, allowed the Powers/Abel swap to proceed.

The #BornholmerStraße #border crossing was one of the first points to be breached when the #BerlinWall fell in November, 1989.
