I have had that 🎶 Hank [sic] and Oscar's old fashion gum 🎶 jingle stuck in my head for days now. 😵💫

For some reason I find myself relentlessly humming Heavenly Pop Hit by The Chills;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd0Y0SQV610
This 1990 single probably won't mean much to anyone who's not a kiwi or indie music fan. But it's an anthem here, even though it kind of breezed past me at the time. It wasn't until half a decade later, when I discovered Male Monster From the Id, and the Soft Bomb album, that Martin Phillipps' quirky songwriting grabbed me.

“Didn’t I” is a very underrated 1999 song by British singer Valerie Etienne. This pop-R&B song is an upbeat romantic ballad with lovely harmonies in the chorus.

Two of my evergreen #EarWorms are, oddly, "I should be so lucky" by Kylie Minogue and "Fuck you" by Ceelo Green which has the most whistle-able tune I know.

I like a lot of Imagine Dragons’ songs and if I were to recommend one of them, “Wrecked” from 2021 would be the one. This song is very emotional yet demonstrates the band’s versatile musical chops, with the song transitioning from acoustic verses to the rock chorus and the choral-like falsetto vocals of the pre-chorus and outro.

“Never imagined, like an assassin / Yeah, one look took me down”
I became really aware of Canadian electronic music duo Sultan + Shepard a few years ago and I instantly loved their 2021 song “Assassin” when I heard it. While it is technically EDM, the song’s vibe is a lot more chill and uplifting especially with the quiet breakdown in the middle.

“The rain, it ain’t permanent / And soon we’ll be dancin’ in the sun”
“Better Days” was written by Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy during the pandemic, and it’s a fantastic listen if you want something optimistic and inspiring, especially with ethereal backing choir singing in Irish.

Released last year, the song “Guess She’s Cool” by British band Only The Poets is one of those underrated upbeat yet lyrically melancholic pop songs that deserves more views.

The Netherlands’ 🇳🇱 entry for #Eurovision 2023 was “Burning Daylight” by Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper. Maybe it’s because it’s not the usual kitschy Eurovision song why I like it a lot (and why it wasn’t in the final), but it actually reminds me of “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence that actually won the contest for the Netherlands in 2019 (and which I selected as one of my #TuneTuesday songs in 2024¹).

I was one of the kids that studied French at school before they strapped in and developed our knowledge of Ancient Greek which I’ve now mostly forgotten except in an etymology context, so imagine my delight with @ishambard infiltrated my earworm with “Hallo Aus Berlin” and the trippy house music of Rolli und Rita composed by the wonderful Sandy Nutkins of “My Parents Are Aliens” fame. Robbed I tell you, but now I shall make up for it in earnest by singing along as if I have no inanition or at least “a really really big cat!” https://youtu.be/h-QvWaoS5J8?is=U96Zwxqg6t9xb-tP #rolliundrita #earworms #90seducationalshows #undeinegroßeKatze.

For the final #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈 song, here is “Deep End”, written by Devin Lewis and Nick Sanza and sung by Sanza for the romcom film Things Like This.

“St. Patrick’s Breastplate” is stuck in my head this morning. “I bind unto myself today…” 🎶 #earworms

Continuing the #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈 theme of featuring queer artists, here is R.E.M.’s 2004 song “Leaving New York”.
While far from being as popular as some of their earlier hits, like “Everybody Hurts” and “Losing My Religion” (based on Spotify streams and YouTube views), I actually like this melancholic song a lot especially the back half with its multiple vocal tracks.

My brain has decided that ordinary #earworms are boring and passé. Earworm mashups are the way to go.
Hence, for the last 36 hours I've had the following on repeat, combining Flying Without Wings by Westlife and Wires by Athlete.

Automatic doors

Continuing the #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈 theme of featuring queer artists, here is Savage Garden’s “Crash and Burn”, easily my most favorite song of this Australian duo from their popular 1999 Affirmation album. The music video with its sign language outro is also fantastic.

Continuing the #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈 theme of featuring queer artists, here is “Closer” by Canadian twins Tegan and Sara. I love this 2013 synth-pop banger about desire, and I also love that they use their platform to advocate for #LGBTQIA+ causes. 💖

For #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈 I will feature songs by queer artists. First up is Adam Lambert’s cover of Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World”. I like the original, but Adam’s haunting and ethereal vocals really elevates his version to something deserving its own accolade.

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas are extraordinary musicians and their song “When the Party’s Over” is one of my favorite of theirs. The song sounds simple, but the multi-layered vocals and understated accompaniment serves to bring out the piece’s deep emotional story.

Lewis Capaldi uses his great voice to put out a bunch of hits and I like that he doesn’t let stardom get into his head and takes his mental and physical health seriously. Among his songs I’ve heard, “Forget Me” is easily my most favorite with his raspy vocals adding angst into the chorus.

Phil Collins, whether solo or with his band Genesis, has produced a lot really good songs. (His work on Tarzan was excellent!) But what I really like about his song “Take Me Home” is that it doesn’t sound like it’s from the 1980s especially with its breathy vocals in the chorus (with Sting and Peter Gabriel singing backup!).

I keep noticing the tab that's open in my browser from looking up recipes for Korean Samgyetang, and every time I see it, I start singing "Samgyetang!" to the tune of the new Netflix "Sandokan" theme song. 😂

Please, I beg of you, whoever has that dreadful Klingon opera tune stuck in their head on Deck 4, stop it immediately. It's on a continuous loop and you aren't even hitting the high notes mentally! It is agonizing. #LwaxanaTroi #Earworms #AllStarTrek #StarTrek #StarTrekTNG #TNG #StarTrekDS9 #DS9 #Mastodon

This unexpected collaboration between Charlie Puth and Utada Hikaru is so good! Charlie is a great musician and him teaming up with one of the biggest and veteran J-pop artists produced this very chill English–Japanese song.

@hyperreal I once had Shaina Taub's "If We Were Married" (Suffs, 2024) stuck so hard I wrote a blog post to get it out. #Earworms

I can definitely see Half Alive’s 2024 song “Sophie’s House” being used in some coming-of-age comedy. The song’s upbeat nostalgic vibe is a really fun listen and like most of their music videos the dance choreography in this one is really good.
