#TuneTuesday (May 12)
Phil Collins, whether solo or with his band Genesis, has produced a lot really good songs. (His work on Tarzan was excellent!) But what I really like about his song “Take Me Home” is that it doesn’t sound like it’s from the 1980s especially with its breathy vocals in the chorus (with Sting and Peter Gabriel singing backup!).

I keep noticing the tab that's open in my browser from looking up recipes for Korean Samgyetang, and every time I see it, I start singing "Samgyetang!" to the tune of the new Netflix "Sandokan" theme song. 😂

Please, I beg of you, whoever has that dreadful Klingon opera tune stuck in their head on Deck 4, stop it immediately. It's on a continuous loop and you aren't even hitting the high notes mentally! It is agonizing. #LwaxanaTroi #Earworms #AllStarTrek #StarTrek #StarTrekTNG #TNG #StarTrekDS9 #DS9 #Mastodon

This unexpected collaboration between Charlie Puth and Utada Hikaru is so good! Charlie is a great musician and him teaming up with one of the biggest and veteran J-pop artists produced this very chill English–Japanese song.

@hyperreal I once had Shaina Taub's "If We Were Married" (Suffs, 2024) stuck so hard I wrote a blog post to get it out. #Earworms

I can definitely see Half Alive’s 2024 song “Sophie’s House” being used in some coming-of-age comedy. The song’s upbeat nostalgic vibe is a really fun listen and like most of their music videos the dance choreography in this one is really good.

For some reason I have 99 Luftballons stuck in my head.

Wyn Starks’s “Who I Am” is one of the best original songs I’ve ever heard performed during a talent show audition. Sadly, Starks was eliminated in the qualifiers of AGT 17 but it doesn’t diminish how great this song is with his powerful vocals.

Since it is currently #HolyWeek, I’m choosing one of the longtime Christian songs that I absolutely love from the #altRock band #JarsOfClay.

The dirver gets to chooses which stream we listen to and my wife usually picks The Bridge, or something related to that, on Sirius--NOT my choice.
But yesterday we heard:
"Close your eyes, give me your hand, do you feel my heart beating? Do you understand? Blah blah blah...is this burning an----e--ter-nal FLAAAAAAAME?"
Dammit! Earworm just will NOT stop...Stupid Bangles.

Upbeat breakup songs are a common trope in pop songs and one of these that I really enjoy is #EdSheeran’s “Overpass Graffiti”.
It seems common to hate on this guy, but I actually like him, his musical skills, and a lot of his songs.

I don’t consider myself a Gleek, but I do like quite a lot of songs featured in the TV show #Glee. And among the numerous covers, one that is in my top favorites is Chris Colfer’s rendition of The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. The original upbeat love song becomes this slow sad ode to a loved one and was used to devastating effect in the TV show.

🕰️ So, someone made a mega playlist of global #earworms from 1940 to 2025. 🎶 It's like a musical time machine that hilariously proves how humanity has consistently confused "catchy" with "good". 😂 But sure, let's all pretend we're DJ Marty McFly, spinning vinyl for the ages. 🎧

I think #Kygo produces the most similar music to the late #Avicii and “Happy Now” in particular was sung by the same singer (Sandro Cavazza) as “Without You”, one of my favorite Avicii songs.
I also like how “Happy Now” is thematically similar to Marshmello/Bastille's “Happier” which I also really love.

#BandcampFriday thread of #goodMusic: the new #geese record i couldnt stand then I couldnt stop listening. Top of a lot of lists for good reason. #Phish had a baby with the #RollingStones and they double majored in art and jazz. #Earworms. https://geesebandnyc.bandcamp.com/album/getting-killed

“And even though all is lost
I’m lost with you” 🎵The Strike is an American indie band I first heard of a more than a year ago and I immediately loved their sound! Their song “The Getaway” in particular is a very uplifting song that wouldn’t feel out of place in a road trip playlist. 😎 (The “Stripped” version of the song is also lovely if you want something more laid back.)

I’m embarrassed to admit that it was only recently that I learned of British singer #OliviaDean. And I instantly loved the first song of hers I heard, “Man I Need”; it gives an old-school 80s/90s vibe and is just a pleasure to listen to. 🎵

One of my favorite EDM producers is #Chicane and one song of his that gives me nostalgia is “Love on the Run” from 2003.

I have been reminded this exists... so now you get to know about it too...
There have been a lot of things I've regretted that the Internet enabled in its existence... a Phil Collins DMX mashup is not one of them.

#Lizzo’s “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” is such a bop and I can’t help liking its infectious energy! It certainly gives me 80s vibes because of the use of synths and especially with the key change for the final chorus. 🎧

#TuneTuesday (Nov 18)
“Problems” is the first song I heard from the American band Arizona and I took an instant liking to it. And for a song about mental health, it surprisingly sounds cheerful and upbeat. But I guess a bit of positivity can sometimes help when you’re feeling down. 🤗
P.S. I subsequently learned that keyboardist David Labuguen is Filipino-American and I thought that was so cool!

#Madonna has produced a lot of music in over four decades—some good and some not my cup of tea. Among the good ones, “I’ll Remember”, from the soundtrack of the 1994 film With Honors, is definitely in my S tier of Madonna songs.

#TuneTuesday (Nov 4)
This week I’m choosing “Want You Back”, the lead single from #Haim’s 2017 album Something to Tell You. Aside from being a really good pop song, I’m fascinated with the one-shot music video featuring a deserted Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles. (Granted, the filming was quite early in the morning according to a street clock, so the disruption to this major street would’ve been minimal.)

♫ Mahna Mahna, Do doo be-do-do ♫ (Why do we get earworms?)

The temptation to keep reposting this article as a sort of 'meta joke' is strong.
And if you read it, you'll see what.

Ok, I have had "Puttin' on the Ritz" in my head for maybe two weeks now. Watched Fred Astaire dance to it, joked about Young Frankenstein with Spouse, am kind of done with it.
But! I realize I do not know Gary Cooper (whom we are "trying hard to look like") at all! I found a suave photo of him, and a later rugged one. Anybody know what movie or movies are considered his best or classic films?

I’m not sure how popular this song is in other countries, but Clair Marlo’s “‘Til They Take My Heart Away” from 1990 is pretty much guaranteed to be on the repertoire of Filipino cover bands and in the songbooks of karaoke machines in the #Philippines. 😄

I recently learned that #JessicaSanchez, the latest winner of #AGT several weeks ago, gave birth to her first child last week. To celebrate this blessing, here’s “Tonight”, her collaboration with Ne-Yo and her biggest single that was released following her near win in American Idol in 2012. 1/2

To me Toad the Wet Sprocket is one of those cool 1990s alternative rock bands and know them for their major hits like “All I Want” and “Fall Down”.
It was only in the last few years that I got to listen to some of their non-singles and “Windmills” from their 1994 album Dulcinea is one that really stood out to me with its laid-back melancholic vibe.

For my final pick for #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈, here’s #TroyeSivan’s “Strawberries & Cigarettes”. This song by Troye, who came out as gay in 2013, was one of the very first songs that put him on my music radar. It also helped that the song was selected for the soundtrack to the movie Love, Simon, which is one of my favorite coming-of-age #LGBTQ films.

Continuing with the #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈 theme, I’m selecting #DavidArchuleta’s “Hell Together” for this week.
Released in 2024, this song was inspired by David’s mom’s journey from being a devout Mormon to leaving the church in support of her son. I especially love the very meaningful lyrics, but the gospel-inspired bridge section also adds a great touch.

There are a lot of really good 90s R&B songs, but I think one of the best ones is the debut single of TQ, “Westside”. TQ’s smooth vocals with some really good musicality and backup vocals make this song such a nostalgic trip.

Gordon
In the realm of music, Gordie Tapp was the first Canadian Gordon who made it big. He was in the country field. Indeed, he was a regular on the country show, Hee Haw. He only had a couple hits because he was more of an entertainer, emcee, broadcaster and writer.
Gordon Lightfoot is the most famous Canadian Gordon musician. With mega hits like Sundown and If You Could Read My Mind, Lightfoot was known world wide and had a huge fan base. Was he folk, country, or rock? No one could really tell but he didn’t need to say, he was just a singer/songwriter that wheedled his way into the hearts and minds of many people.
Gord Deppe is the main songwriter and singer/guitarist for the Canadian rock band The Spoons. They had the hits Nova Heart, Romantic Traffic and Those Old Emotions. He’s also been known to play guitar for Flock of Seagulls.
Gord Downie was the lead singer and lyricist for the Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. He led the band through most of their existence and even put out some of his own solo work. He died tragically in 2017 of terminal brain cancer.
Probably all you non Canadians figure that there must be a lot of Canadian Gordons since so many are successful musicians. But that’s just not true. I’ve lived my whole 57 years in Canada and have just personally known 1 Gordon. He was a teacher of mine.
So this famous Canadian musician thing that the Gordons have is a statistical anomaly.
In the very early nineties, the Canadian rock band the Bare Naked Ladies seemed to be doing everything right. Their shock name got the attention of nearly everyone, they had two lead singers and had an album’s worth of songs including 4 or 5 that were ear worms. All they needed was a good album title and perhaps they could guarantee success.
They decided to play it conservatively and went with the name Gordon, simply based on how popular Canadians named Gordon seemed to be in pop. They contrived themselves into a successful release and the rest is history for the band.
