  1. Die Doku hier war auch nice, aber kein muss.

    Überleben am Limit, 97 Min.

    Verfügbar bis zum 29/11/2026

Was tun angesichts der steigenden Temperaturen?

  3. Sometime ago I complained that there weren't enough #earthship posts on Masto. What to do? What we always do. Do it yourself. Enjoy!

Il y a quelque temps, je me plaignais qu’il n’y avait pas assez de publications sur les #earthships sur Masto. Que faire ? Ce qu’on fait toujours : s’en occuper soi-même. Bonne découverte !

  5. So, I saw a piece about the #Taos #Earthship community late last night on #VeryLocal (unfortunately, I can't find any video link as yet). However, I did find a piece from 2024 about them...

"This summer’s extreme heat and the demand for air conditioning are putting a big strain on the electricity grid in many parts of the nation. But for more than 40 years, a pioneering architect in New Mexico has been building a unique kind of home that can be heated and cooled without using any electricity at all. Special Correspondent Megan Thompson reports."

Apologies I'm an engineering ignoramous, but on this note, I'd be fascinated to see a variant of the "earthship home" design with - instead of rammed-earth-tyre walls - concrete block walls. I think planners might find this easier to accept, among other reasons for trying it. What I can't get my head around is how to have an earth-berm in contact with the building without it getting damp. The design evolved in desert climates where this isn't a problem. Anecdotes from the UK suggest damp is a problem with the design when implemented there.

Some folks won't like the idea of swapping in concrete to replace the tyres; I'd just point out that an earthship made with concrete is better than one that isn't made at all, and sadly that's where we're at in most housing developments.

At any rate, wherever you direct your intellect, good luck! LLMs are probably your friend for filling out grant proposals without going mad ;) many free ones eg.: www.duck.ai

  12. My newest #investment is in GeoShip, which is a company that starting this year will be selling #earthship homes made from #bioceramics that mimic bone. #Earthships are the most #sustainable, low cost way to live. They naturally heat and cool the space with little #energy consumption. They are the most #environment friendly way to live. #environmentmastodon

  13. @jupitersigh I just remembered another book I have that talks about many of the same principles, The Earth Shelter Handbook. It was published in 1980 so the section on building codes is probably ancient, but the core concepts hold up when it comes to earth structures! And the bonus, this one’s on the IA.

  14. #Off-grid ecovillages , earthships can make life really easy and happy.

But doesn't mean you can't find crimes there.

    If you've heard of #Greaterworld #earthship
This is something you should know. ☮️

  17. @Iragersh @bsmall2 oh so you're looking for a one-size-fits-all solution. interesting. a "sustainable urban lifestyle" in NYC wouldn't work for me in rural Vermont. However many aspects of my lifestyle are sustainable, low impact and renewable. I use nature as my measure. (in the ways that Wes Jackson and Wendell Berry teach). The vision of an #Earthship is to be sustainable and to meet the needs of that place -making each unique. So, for example, the one on Puerto Rico is hurricane proof, solar, multiple water collection & filtration receptacles and is surrounded by a food forest and gardens that grow native foods. it uses the cooler air from the ground to cool the living spaces. which is so important all year in a tropical climate. the specifics of that wouldn’t be useful to many places off the island/outside of a tropical climate. but the bigger ideas would be

the most impressive feature of the earthship design, IMO, is #bioarchitecture. they are built using trash/recycling and other non traditional materials. there is some real forward thinking around bio architecture that can be used in many different climates so i’d imagine in urban and rural places too.

    thx for sharing your thoughts!

  19. Hey, here's an open question: do you ever think of things you would have to do to live in a #CarbonNeutral dwelling? Would you try retrofitting where you currently live, or try and move to a place that already is carbon neutral?

Examples of #retrofitting would be exchanging windows, adding extra insulation, installing a clean electricity source, exchanging appliances, and so on.

A place that's already carbon neutral could be a freshly built house/apartment building that uses the right materials, an #earthship something else.

  21. Biosphere, the biotic and abiotic ecosphere.

These are the voyages of the planet Earth.

Its continuing orbit around a bright yellow dwarf star, to evolve new life forms and new civilizations, to "boldly" go around where it.........? erm? went around before.
