tonight was less clear than last night, and there was also a LOT less earthshine! i think it was because the twilight had fully faded. so, i think earthshine is maximal somewhere between the new crescent phase, and the gibbous waxing crescent phase. that's when there's a balance between the twilight being too bright to see the earthshine, and the phase-lag between the Sun and the Moon too large for the earthshine to be visible! #earthshine #astronomy

Turns out there is more in the solar eclipse images that the #Apollo11 astronauts took the day before landing when a 10° Moon covered the Sun than one usually sees - the key is having the best scans. Out of https://tothemoon.ser.asu.edu/gallery/Apollo/11/Hasselblad%20500EL%2070%20mm#AS11-42-6179 I could extract this - with lots of #earthshine AND #corona. Too bad the camera wasn't stable enough ...

The photograph shows the Moon in the waxing crescent phase, with only a small sliver of the Sun-illuminated side visible on its right side.
The rest of the Moon glows, albeit much less brightly, by the light of the Sun after it has been reflected off of Earth - a phenomenon called #Earthshine.
