  1. Oh shit.. I hadn’t read Octavia Butler’s Earthseed before.

She practically predicted Project 2025, and that it could lead to a christo-fascist America by 2032, where people can’t read, there’s no public schooling to speak of, and child labour is widespread.

It is a story of small groups of people living in the hills, trying to retain civilisation while America goes to war abroad… 🫣

  2. CW: US Pol, Greenland, Minor Book Spoiler, Octavia Butler

In “Parable of the Talents” by Octavia Butler, a demagogue elected US President whose slogan was “Make America Great Again” and encouraged an orgy of violence and Christian Nationalism was undone by an ill-conceived war in the Arctic to take territory and restore national greatness….

  3. I read Octavia Butler's The Parable of the Sower and was touched.

Now I read her The Parable of the Talents and I just want to cry.

How close she was to writing a quarter of a century ago about one of the futures possible today.

How I wish this doesn't come true.

  5. I looked down
    And there you were…

    A resplendent moment.
    A beautiful contrast.
    The insistence of life.

    (And the reminder,
    “God is change”).

  6. I finished reading Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, I highly recommend it!

It was a difficult read for me at times, but in the end, I concluded that the journey was beautiful. It was great to read about community, love and compassion within a collapsing world.

  7. Less than one year until #ParableOfTheSower. What would the equivalent of Back to the Future parties be for this occasion? #Earthseed rituals?

  8. @StephanieACain @librarianshipwreck
Though as an atheist, I found the quasi-religious aspect of #Earthseed disturbing and unnecessary. Though maybe I don't understand what motivates other people—my Freidenker/freethinker grandfather used to say that for some people, "the soup isn't thick enough," even with religion: they need astrology, palm-reading, paranormal, etc. #ScienceFiction #OctaviaButler

  9. The four rules seem to align with the central tenets of Earthseed:
    - Learn from the past
    - Respect the law of consequences
    - Be aware of your perspective
    - Count on the surprises

  10. Here is a small bit of my new tattoo. I had never thought I'd have work on my hands, but here we are, and I love it. If you're unfamiliar, godischange.org/god-is-change/

  11. I was thinking about Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower series. It is very prophetic to be honest. A lot of what she details in the two books seems to parallel what is happening right now. (She even predicted a person running for president under the "make America Great again" tagline).

It's the second book that really makes me wonder if Butler is one of the first authors to dig deep into what a solarpunk world could look like on a larger scale. Especially a scale that goes into space (as that was part of the goals of Earthseed).

I probably should do a reread of the books and write down some further thoughts for a post someday.

And if you haven't read them, go read them now. They're one of the best series I've ever read.

  12. The Book of the Living, verse 15: Power Struggles
    All struggles
    Are essentially
    power struggles.
    Who will rule,
    Who will lead,
    Who will define,
    refine,
    confine,
    design,
    Who will dominate.
    All struggles
    Are essentially power struggles,
And most are no more intellectual
    than two rams
    knocking their heads together.

  13. I've loved Parable of the Sower for years. I'm finally reading Parable of the Talents.

I wonder how much better the world would be if Octavia Butler had completed her trilogy & the world had listened.

I also wonder what authors today have similar visions. Will the world listen?

  14. I am not a religious person by any means, but #OctaviaButler’s #Earthseed is a spiritual system I could really get behind.

  15. Civilization is to groups what intelligence is to individuals. It is a means of combining the intelligence of many to achieve ongoing group adaptation.

Civilization, like intelligence, may serve well, may serve adequately, or fail to serve its adaptive function. When civilization fails to serve, it must disintegrate unless it is acted upon by unifying internal or external forces.
