  1. @ScotInTraining I don't think that this is true - We can't 'tech' our way out of climate breakdown - we have to do less tech and live within planetary means. 'We' listen to tech bros with bridges to sell at our peril.

  3. For anyone that was at #311Day #2020, the first episode of #EarthAbides does a great job of capturing that feeling of an empty Las Vegas strip.

  4. I was looking forward to watching this miniseries and finally got around to it this past weekend.

    TBH I found it disappointing.

Granted the miniseries was only 6 episodes and so they had to cram a lot into those 6 episodes.

The book was 'of a time' and I would have preferred that the miniseries was set in that time, instead of modern day.

  5. @bookstodon It appears I want the world to end.
I recently finished #EarthAbides and have ordered #TheDeathOfGrass and have #ACanticleForLeibowitz on my TBR, though I don't own a copy yet. #TheLongTomorrow by #LeighBrackett sounds interesting too, but what else might interest me?
    It's Payday next week...

  6. @bookstodon I just finished #EarthAbides and am now rereading #YokohamaKaidashiKikou. Both are #postapocalyptic but couldn't be more different. I love #YKK it's such a sweet story, and amazing art.

After a break reading other stuff I picked up #EarthAbides again, and am about halfway in. It really shows it is one the first novels exploring a #postapoc setting, and not written after decades of fiction, movies and TV-series have made a lot of us familiar with the topic, even if we aren't preppers. The contrast is interesting.
It was first published 75 years ago, so some language and views are very dated, but with that in mind, I'm really enjoying the book.

  8. Half way through S1 of #EarthAbides
Enjoying it, not like the usual post-apocalypse series.

I'm a few chapters into Earth Abides by George R. Stewart.
It was published in 1949 and naturally shows its age here and there, but so far I'm really enjoying it. I hadn't heard of it until a couple of years ago, but a SF Masterworks series copy has been sitting on my shelf for a while until I decided to start reading it today.

And I only learned a couple of days ago that a TV Series based on the book will premiere soon. Let's hope they don't make a hash of it.

  10. I both loved and was deeply disturbed reading the George Stewart's " #EarthAbides " -- a thought-out and morose tale of the collapse of civilization after a 99.9% deadly plague sweeps the globe.

I won't be watching the MGM+ adaptation, though, both because that's a streaming service I don't have, and because either it will be faithful to the original (and deeply depressing), or not (and so depressing in its own way).

  11. Hollywood is making a tv series based on the 1949 science fiction novel, Earth Abides. I hope they do this story justice. It’s been years since I read it, but it was a thought-provoking one from what I recall: deadline.com/video/earth-abide

  12. Sci-Fi Classic Novel Finally Gets Series Adaptation:

A Post-Apocalypse Classic - Earth Abides, written by George R. Stewart.

I've read this novel a couple of times, and am looking forward to watching this miniseries.

  13. I hate to be the guy who judges things before they exist, but ... I just don't see how the movie adaptation of #EarthAbides is going to do the book any justice. I sincerely hope it will ... but, as someone on #Metafilter said, "get prepared for Earth Abides: Kickpuncher Requiem"
