El asunto de la lectura en pantallas se ha puesto bastante difícil por culpa del control que tienen las marcas más famosas del mercado. Cuando compramos un libro digital en las plataformas que todos conocen, en realidad no somos los verdaderos dueños del archivo. Las empresas nos ponen candados que nos impiden prestar ese libro a un amigo o leerlo en la aplicación que se nos dé la gana. Prácticamente nos volvemos inquilinos de nuestra propia biblioteca, amarrados a lo que decidan esas corporaciones. Por fortuna, el mundo del software libre tiene soluciones para que la tecnología trabaje a nuestro favor, y hay una herramienta muy conocida que vino a cambiar por completo las reglas del juego.
La historia de este programa comenzó el 31 de octubre de 2006, cuando un programador llamado Kovid Goyal se dio cuenta de que su nuevo lector de libros electrónicos no se podía conectar con el sistema operativo libre GNU/Linux. Como las grandes empresas no ofrecían ninguna ayuda, decidió meter las manos en el código por su cuenta para arreglar el problema. Así fue como nació este proyecto, que en sus primeros días se llamó libprs500. La idea creció muy rápido porque creadores de software de todo el mundo se unieron para ayudar, usando lenguajes de programación como Python y C. Gracias a ese esfuerzo de la comunidad, hoy el programa funciona igual de bien en cualquier computadora con Linux, Windows o macOS.
Lo mejor de este gestor de libros es que respeta tu privacidad al 100%. Mientras las tiendas comerciales vigilan lo que lees y guardan tus datos en sus servidores, este programa libre guarda toda la información directamente en el disco duro de tu computadora de forma transparente. Sus funciones te permiten desde corregir errores en los textos hasta cambiar el formato de cientos de libros al mismo tiempo. Puedes pasar un archivo de PDF a EPUB o a MOBI de manera muy fácil, logrando que tus lecturas se puedan abrir en cualquier pantalla sin importar la marca del aparato. Por esta razón, muchas bibliotecas públicas y escuelas usan esta herramienta para organizar sus colecciones digitales de acceso abierto sin pagar licencias caras.

Der Schwarm von Frank Schätzing hat rund 1.000 Seiten. In Punktschrift, Vollschrift, wären das etwa 3.000 Seiten Papier. Grob 15 dicke Bände. Fast ein Meter im Regal. Für ein einziges Buch. Unsere WG hat schon jetzt kaum Platz für den Staubsauger. Ich müsste mich entscheiden: Schwarm oder Sofa. Und im Zug? Nehme ich dann einen Rollkoffer nur für Kapitel 4 mit? Mein E-Book wiegt nichts.
