"When governments and big companies borrow money, they don’t ask a bank for a loan. Instead, they sell IOUs to investors and promise to repay the money with a certain interest rate. If those IOUs are set to be repaid many years from now, they’re called #bonds".
"Rising prices make bond purchasers think that the nominal annual fixed interest they will get from the bond will be devalued over time by inflation, so the real return they get will fall. So bond holders will only buy bonds in the secondary market at lower prices to compensate. As we have explained above, falling bond prices means higher yields. Also governments issuing new bonds will have to offer higher fixed rates to attract new purchasers."

ANDY BURNHAM MUST GIVE BRITAIN AN IDEOLOGY, NOT ANOTHER MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT’S POWERPOINT by Lawson Akhigbe
There was something important about Andy Burnham's intervention at Prime Minister's Questions. Not simply because of what he said, but because of what it appeared to recognise: Britain has not merely been badly governed. Britain has been travelling in the wrong ideological direction for decades. -
Back to Basics, Rebranded: Burnham’s High Streets and the Politics of Looking Busy by Lawson Akhigbe
John Major's government never intended "Back to Basics" to become a punchline. Launched in 1993 as a pitch for moral and civic renewal, family values, personal responsibility, respect for the old certainties, it was retail politics in the purest sense: cheap to announce, easy to photograph, and entirely disconnected from the actual machinery of governing a mid-sized post-imperial economy adjusting to the ERM's wreckage. Section 28 sat quietly in the background as inherited scaffolding for this mood music, and the Education Act 1993's sex-education clauses supplied a fresh, deniable coat of paint. None of it required legislative heavy lifting. All of it signalled seriousness to an audience that wanted reassurance more than reform. The scheme collapsed, memorably, when half the cabinet turned out to be failing the basics they were instructed to return to. -
Fiscal responsibility and tax cuts

"the obvious truth that from the presidency on down, the #Republican Party has a cataclysmic record when it has power...
“Jobs are just one factor. The performance of the #StockMarket under #Democrats is much, much stronger than under #Republicans. The increases in median household income & amount by which they’ve reduced the #deficit are much greater... The comparisons aren’t close, but you never hear any Democrats talk about it.”

AP’s coverage∶
The #NationalDebt surpassed a record $40 trillion Wednesday, a staggering milestone as #defense costs, #social programs like #SocialSecurity & #Medicare & interest on the burgeoning #deficit to make up an enormous share of federal spending.
The milestone figure was recorded just 5 months after the US hit a record $39 trillion debt in March. It reached $38 trillion 5 months before that, in October [all under #Trump’s watch].

Once upon a time, it was an absolute political and economical scandal when the US government ran up an annual deficit of a trillion dollars. [1]
Under Trump's tax cuts for the rich and bloated spending for his pet projects and well-connected contractors, the USA just ran up a $432 billion deficit ... in July. In one month. At that rate, you're looking at an annual deficit in the five trillion dollar range.
The accumulated debt is "only" 40 trillion or so, for what that's worth.
The USA will *never* repay this debt. It's not possible. And in the current political system, they will not get their budget deficits under control - no chance, at all.
How do they keep the money train going, you ask? It's because other countries park their money in US Treasury bonds and other US-denominated holdings. There is a built-in demand for US currency that doesn't depend on financial performance of the USA at all. This demand has existed ever since the end of the Bretton Woods system.
And it's primarily because of oil.
If you ignore the the recent Russian sanctioned oil sales (via their shadow fleet of tankers) to India and some other countries, essentially all oil is traded in US dollars.

[1] Before that, it was a similar scandal when the accumulated debt of the USA reached a trillion dollars.

FROM NOW ON, EVERY TIME I MEET A T**** SUPPORTER...
...I will ask them to name the things that (they believe) made the #Carter Administration "a failed presidency." 🤔
WE will be able to add: "Exploding the #Debt #Deficit, depleting our weapons stockpile, repeated violations of the #Constitution, accepting Hundreds of Millions in #emoluments/bribes, inciting a treasonous attack on our Capitol, alienating our allies, #ConcentrationCamps, and leaving the WH & #ReflectingPool an absolute mess."
