  1. Scientists explore Dyson spheres around red and white dwarfs as potential alien megastructures

📰 Original title: The galaxy’s coldest "stars" may actually be alien megastructures

  2. This is a really fascinating paper on a systematic search for #DysonSpheres using the large galaxy survey data thats available. The results are very interesting indeed. #Astronomy No it's not proof of advanced Alien civilisations. But it looks like a neat bit of survey work at least to these layperson eyes.

  4. Scientists have found 'evidence' of advanced alien civilisations

No actual news. Just the ongoing search for Dyson spheres. Excess infrared radiation is the tipoff, with a handful of candidate sightings identified by Project Hephaistos. Real tipoff will be when a Dyson sphere is listed with Sotheby’s.

  5. IMHO #DysonSpheres and #Superflares are pretty incompatible. I seriously doubt anybody would consider them commercially viable. Even Elon probably would not build one. And, even worse, no insurance would cover things like superflares.

  6. #DysonSpheres: Could #alien #megastructures exist in the #MilkyWay? Scientists found 7 places to look
Have scientists discovered infrared radiation, evidence of waste heat generated by the energy-harvesting star-surrounding spheres first proposed by British American physicist #FreemanDyson?

  8. #Astronomy has another case of "#Bullshit circles the planet before the truth gets its shoes on" - A recent paper looked for #DysonSpheres by finding red stars which coincided with radio emission. The hype resulted in a thousand news articles... except a new paper shows they failed to check whether normal red M-dwarf stars might happen to be close to normal radio sources (radio-loud AGN) 🤦‍♂️ arxiv.org/abs/2405.14921
Now we'll be lucky if this good science gets 10% the press that the original did.

  10. @Myoldpiano @sundogplanets Isaac Arthur did a #FermiParadox compendium a little while back ⤵️ that goes into more detail on the various solutions but the "intelligence" is assumed to be technological abilities observable one way or another but not limited to radio we should be able to spot #DysonSpheres in our galaxy & clusters of them in our local group.

On my more optimistic days I am in the rare Earth ➕ many filters etc faction including Light really is a speed limit.

  12. We Should Be Looking for Small, Hot Dyson Spheres

If you chart humanity's rising energy use, we'll eventually be using all the solar radiation that falls on Earth, and then all the energy emitted by the Sun - a Dyson sphere (or swarm). A new paper investigates the thermodynamics of Dyson spheres, considering the different trade-offs between the energy received, the amount of computation they could perform, and how they could dissipate their heat. According to the paper, the most efficient use of mass is to create very small, hot Dyson spheres. This will help astronomers search for them across the galaxy.

  15. I mean yes, interstellar objects could be fragments of a Dyson sphere, but like isn't it more likely an icy rock, or snowball that had some outgassing? Definitely worth someone thinking about it, but I wish the author would add a sentence to say it's more likely 'Oumuamua is of natural origin and not artificial iopscience.iop.org/article/10. #dysonspheres #interstellar #astrodon
