when i was a teenager, it was pretty rare to have games that ran in VGA/EGA hi-res modes. so whenever i came across one, it was a rare treat.
TIM runs in 640x440 using non-square pixels. that's already a fairly uncommon graphics mode in its time.
even weirder: the original diskette for it reads "256 color" on it. except..... the game isn't 256 colours! not even close. it is a *16 colour game*. it uses the standard EGA palette colours with one tweak: it replaces screaming pink magenta with a warm gold.
it manages pull off the 256-colour-like look through dithering. zoom in to the screenshots to see how the artist creates really beautiful texture and colour ramps using just 2-3 colours. (e.g. the gold plating in the first pic)

Adding the game "Betrayal at Krondor" to my personal collection. This is a DOS game from 1993.
Thanks to the amazing work of the retro gaming community, there are already several different versions of disk images available. All of them tested and verified, which is incredibly awesome! I'm really grateful for this. 🙂

Однако где-то были реализованы не все возможности, где-то не хватало веб-интерфейса и приходилось работать через консоль, где-то страдало быстродействие. Тесное сотрудничество с YADRO позволяло подходить к решению этих проблем с обеих сторон, плюс, многие наши заказчики регулярно интересовались развитием поддержки TATLIN.UNIFIED в наших продуктах. И вот на этой неделе мы объявили о более глубокой интеграции между TATLIN.UNIFIED Gen 2 и Basis Dynamix Enterprise, включающей поддержку репликации и мгновенных снимков через интерфейс платформы. today, some obscure sierra on-line & dynamix history that *shouldn't be* obscure yet is due to how gaming culture developed: Front Page Sports Baseball. this just came in the mail, and i'm so glad to finally have my own copy after playing a demo from a CD-ROM Today! magazine cover disc as a kid.
this dynamix-produced and sierra-published title is weird for a bunch of reasons.
first, it's one of the last few DOS-only games that came out in the mid-90s.
second, it runs in hi-res mode using what i *suspect* is a blend of software-rendered 3D and 2D sprites that were a holdover from dynamix's 3Space engine used in almost all of dynamix's titles. (pic 2) the animation is crisp, the sprites are beautifully rendered in a very compressed colour palette.
third, the Front Page Sports series were massive hits - outselling other sierra/dynamix titles of the time. but no one talks about it, because sports games often get irritated yawns from gamers.
fourth, this game is *fun* to play. it's not just an average EA sports-style title. the batting/pitching gameplay is addictive, and the simulation of the players and teams is deep.

this dynamix-produced and sierra-published title is weird for a bunch of reasons.
first, it's one of the last few DOS-only games that came out in the mid-90s.
second, it runs in hi-res mode using what i *suspect* is a blend of software-rendered 3D and 2D sprites that were a holdover from dynamix's 3Space engine used in almost all of dynamix's titles. (pic 2) the animation is crisp, the sprites are beautifully rendered in a very compressed colour palette.
third, the Front Page Sports series were massive hits - outselling other sierra/dynamix titles of the time. but no one talks about it, because sports games often get irritated yawns from gamers.
fourth, this game is *fun* to play. it's not just an average EA sports-style title. the batting/pitching gameplay is addictive, and the simulation of the players and teams is deep.
and finally, there is - unbelievably - still an active FPS Baseball community still modding and developing rosters for the game. someone maintains a tool that *generates websites* that lets other people see the outcomes of your baseball games like a late-90s ESPN network site 🤣 https://www.silverbox.com/biorhythm/

This came in this morning; a still new in box (shrink wrapped and all) copy of #Dynamix' Heart of China, for Macintosh. The embossed front really looks nice in person.
The box is positively *packed* with extra flyers and booklets. It's so fun when games (used to) come with a bunch of goodies.
I opened this one right away as I wanted to see if the 8 floppy disks the game on still read fine. Fortunately enough, they do!

Did #Dynamix ever make a bad game? My feeling is their track record is pretty much spotless. Not only that, a large number of their works was great in their day and even holds up well today. Case in point, #ProjectFirestart.
