  10. Milky Way will probably devour all the tiny #galaxies that surround it
    Based on data from #ESA's Gaia mission, it was found that many dwarf galaxies that were orbiting #MilkyWay only a few BYA have ended up destroyed after being pulled in by our much more massive galaxy. It is possible #darkmatter has something to do with this. By identifying galactic remnants, they determined that most #dwarfgalaxy remnants within the Milky Way only entered it within the last 3B yr or so

    An article accepted for publication in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" reports a study of a dwarf galaxy cataloged as HIPASS J1131–31 that is relatively close but has the characteristics of a primordial galaxy. They nicknamed it Peekaboo because it peeks out from behind a bright star that hid it for a long time and made it difficult to identify.

  13. @coreyspowell When a #SpiralGalaxy is approached by a much smaller companion, such as a #DwarfGalaxy, the larger #Galaxy's uneven gravitational pull will start to severely distort the smaller star system. Over the course of a few billion years, tendril-like structures develop.
