2nd year.
We made it through the winter without losses.
We welcomed the 2nd year, and the trade caravan of our home civilization.
We got the fortress running quite well. Alas, we attracted no new dwarfves this year.
So we have to run the fortress with only a dozen or so of us.
A lot of jobs keep lagging quite long, a lot of stuff remains in the workshop. Not good.
Alas, let's hope we don't attract any... unwanted attention. We can't afford to run a military yet.

#Playing #DwarfFortress and I've set out on a megaproject to bridge two islands/continents.
But, it's a pretty cold place, and the ocean is not frozen maybe 2-3 months out of the year.

We now have farms.
We got out first trade caravan visitors - a bit embarrassing, we had very few crafts to sell.
Also, we already got two migrant waves. Digging is way easier with more hands.

Food and drink for the winter seem to be secured.

My year in the succession fort.

We are infested with Necromancers. We have at least twenty living in our fort now. Including the Duke and our manager.

Our Queen is now situated in her chambers with her rose gold furniture. And a few artifacts.

We have magma forges setup.

I commissioned a statue for every notable figure from our previous fort. There are many about the werechameleon outbreak that was its downfall.

A few beasts found a way to get inside the fortress.

Not the worst entrance I've ever done...

Meanwhile back in the succession fort a lot of things have happened in the 3 years since I last played.

We have dug deep and found the magma sea.

Our Queen has come to rule our lands from here.

A Minotaur attacked, but left a strange artifact behind.

The game was temporarily converted to adventure mode so a brave dwarf could read the mysterious stone and write a book of its secrets.

We now have a cabal of necromancers living on the surface.

I guess it’s my turn.

Been slowly working on that statues for my fortress. I have a couple halls for slabs of the missing, and making statues for each. Occasionally I end up making a slab for a non-citizen.

Sometimes I ask for a statue of someone, but the name ends up being something unexpected so I have to examine it and figure out where it belongs.

I think poor Åblel Gearrock was lost in an expedition, which means he has no slab or grave, and haunts wherever he fell.

Now that I can order up statues for individual dwarves, I’m working on making statues for every dwarf that died in the rampage of Iwethi Ayítiefaci Obi Otira, Whisperhated Shadow of Ships.

I already had a bunch queued for dwarves that died previously, most of those commemorated how they died (thirst, forgotten beast, etc), when they were appointed to a position, or when they slew a forgotten beast themselves. Or when they became owned by a pet

We’ll see how these turn out.

Steam Dwarf Fortress is a much easier UX, but the crafting chain is WAY more complex. Moreover, given that there are at least three ways to assign work/jobs/tasks, I find that system way more confusing, even if it is much easier to tweak. I'm just not sure what I'm tweaking. Why do we have 35 wheelbarrows but no doors??? Want more bedrooms?? We need doors!!

It would be a huge improvement if there was a pause button in the work orders system just like they do at the workshop level. No more wheelbarrows until I figure out why my logic is wrong, ok? ONLY make doors!

The first of the statues I commissioned of Nil Stukosôsed, Dragonslayer, savior of The Released Standards of Swordsprayed.

Apparently he was afraid of hamsters.

My hubris has cost me.

After my successful siege defense, I sent my veteran squads to retaliate and raze one of the smaller goblin pits.

Unfortunately while they were away a fierce dragon got in before I could close the gate to the caverns.

I lost over 70 dwarves before it was finally killed. The brave dwarf who killed it died of his wounds afterwards.

This poor elf. His tombstone says “disappeared”, which means nobody witnessed the dragon incinerate him.

I asked my craftsdwarves to make a statue of him. Apparently the only story he told us was about his divorce nearly 400 years ago.

Another goblin siege at the end of winter. While it had 165 invaders, things went fairly well this time. I did lose three dwarves, I’m not certain exactly how, as far as I can tell they never made it inside. Maybe the stress of manning bolt throwers was too much for some citizens. Eventually I had to send my squads out to attack, as 89 siege engineers just cowered in the corner even after I raised the gate. No soldiers lost in the counter offensive our queen led.

Now that I know I can commission statues of specific dwarves, I’ve been busy.

Sometimes it’s hard to match statues to graves because one uses the real name, and the other a translation.

Many commemorate appointments to new positions, but I’m most fascinated by the more mundane statues.

Accidentally made one of a dog. I like how it commentates the dog becoming an owner of a dwarf.

In my solo fort I had a rampaging dragon get in and kill 8 citizens, but my queen was the one to defeat it.

I learned how to tell them to make statues of specific people, so I made a platinum statue of her for her tomb.

And now I’ve been busy ordering statues of other notable dwarves past and present.

Although our artists already made statues of a renowned cook who passed a decade ago, and our current mayor who remains quite popular.

Scrolling with the gyro of the controller on spreadsheet games like Dwarf Fortress is absolutely a game changer!

I just looked on YouTube and it doesn't seem like anyone has made a Dwarf Fortress theme park. At least not and put it on YouTube.

It seems totally possible to make a theme park fortress. Minecart roller coasters. Make rides using gears, giant corkscrews, and pressure plates. Magma tunnel of love. A haunted ride or two would be nice.

All doable.

I don't think you could necessarily make the dwarfs understand what these things are for. But you might be able to trick/force them through a couple of rides.

I however am not the person to do this. It's beyond my patience and cognitive energy. (I never even had patience to design my own coasters in the Rollar Coaster Tycoon games. I went with the prefabs.)

But I want somebody to do it.

Today's pointless project my solo fort, I built a temple complex to Moldath God of Minerals and his 22 sects.

Things I’ve learned with a long running successful fort:

If you want more caravans you can send out messengers to try and improve trade with additional neighbors.

If all the nearby goblin holes have ~20 goblins you can easily eliminate them by sending 40 veteran dwarves.

If you are in an area too peaceful for goblin armies, sending 40 dwarves to raid a pit with 200 goblins a week away will provoke a response.

I lost two dwarves in the fighting, including our beloved broker.

We've got a pretty solid start with our first migration wave, but we are still waiting for the first caravan to arrive. Since we're in tundra, we'll likely need an import agreement for wood to make sure we are well stocked. We plan on moving to the first cave layer as soon as possible but this will take a bit of time.
