"Reb Zalman zt”l taught that one of the ways to write an innovative drash is to “dilate” a key word from the Hebrew text or the theme of a holiday, and then see what the word wants to reveal to you. By “dilate” he meant revealing the etymological root of a particular word pertaining to the theme of the holiday, and there you’ll find a metaphor. Once you uncover the metaphor a lot of fresh ideas will come to you as you write the drash."

I heard a #DvarTorah this weekend that has challenged me in a good way - to seek to recognize the coexistence of two great tragedies at the same time (the ongoing suffering of the Israeli hostages and those who were injured and killed by #Hamas on October 7th), as well as the ongoing horrific suffering of the #Palestinian people in #Gaza, including the deaths, injuries, displacement and destruction of so many civilians.
We should not let anyone limit our love and our solidarity, and we should not let anyone tell us to quit caring and to quit working for #Peace and and #SocialJustice for all.
The tension between my emotions involving these two tragedies is real, but I also think that more than ever it is essential to stay in the tension and to even embrace it. The easy route is to "pick a side," but I tink the better route is to embrace the common humanity of all of the victims of war and violence.
