  1. Fascinating deep dive into New Amsterdam's 140-year history from City Beautiful Blog. Did you know the first Jewish settlers arrived in 1654 after being rescued from Spanish pirates? Or that Harlem was named after the Dutch city Haarlem?
From Verrazano's 1524 sighting through Peter Stuyvesant's stern rule to the peaceful 1664 English takeover, this timeline reveals the Dutch colonial foundations of modern NYC.

  2. Similar to a Dutch internment camp in Surinam I wrote this #Wikipedia article for a couple years ago. Likewise there Germans were interned because of their citizenship (basically, those who happened to be nearby when the war broke out; sailors, missionaries, random people). It included some known Nazi sympathizers but also non-Nazis or anti-Nazis. I don't believe it had any German-Jewish internees in that case.

  4. 10 mei 1932. #geschiedenis #nederland #volkslied #wilhelmus #dutchhistory

  5. The “Morspoort” is a gate that played a significant role in the history of Leiden, particularly during “Leidens Ontzet” or Leiden's Relief. On October 3rd, 1574, during the 80 Years War, Dutch rebels led by William of Orange liberated Leiden from the Spanish siege. Every year, the Morspoort serves as one of the starting points of the traditional 3 Oktober festival.
