Last time I used #Duplicati, it randomly corrupted my multi-year backup with no way of restoring it. Granted that was several years ago, but it broke my trust in them completely. Now that they're reframing themselves around #AI, I'd encourage anyone considering them to run very VERY fast in the other direction. Use something like Restic instead - it's been rock solid for me.

I’m thinking that rsync is not sufficient for important large data backups. Even if I’m rsyncing the data away to the Hetzner Storage Box.
I need something more advanced with deduplication and so on. I tried #borgbackup in the past, and that thing was absolutely not user-friendly. It was rather user-hostile.
Now, #SelfHosted community has #Duplicati and #Duplicacy? Does someone use one? Any recommendations?

Getting annoyed enough at #Duplicati that I'm looking at alternative backup solutions again... I'm trying to get my backup size slimmed down and am then going to try an alternative called #Kopia.

It's frustratingly difficult to do anything with Duplicati because both its command-line and browser interfaces are very unfriendly and cumbersome. Trying to figure out what to prune from my backup set to make it smaller is horribly painful.

Bei vergangenen BackupPartys haben wir plattformübergreifend (vor Jaaaaaaahren🧓 ) auf #Duplicati für regelmäßige Sicherungen gesetzt, waren damit aber wegen vieler kleinerer Macken nicht glücklich. Hat sich da was getan? Dass die einzig gepflegte Version 2 der Software auch als Beta markiert war, sorgte auch nicht für Grundvertrauen.

Für Komplettsicherungen haben wir damals auf #Redobackup und #Clonezilla gesetzt. Hier nutzen wir inzwischen das bewährte #Rescuezilla (quasi-Nachfolge von Redo).

If you use Duplicati on your Linux server via Docker to perform backups to an external USB drive, this must be mounted before the container starts up. Otherwise, Duplicati will throw an error ("missing files") when it tries to perform the backup because it cannot verify the files on the external drive, even though it tells you that it can detect that external drive.

The quickest solution in this case is to restart the Duplicati container.

I’ve been playing with #Duplicati on MacOS and I’m finding it restrictive in that it requires a set number of backups to be retained. I want none, just replace it/them because I’m sending it/them to NAS and eventually offsite.

Duplicati is in the process of saving my ass again, but their backup restores are extremely slow.

Their web interface is neat and the handling is more or less intuitive, but I think I'm going back to the rsync & cron script formula.

It's what I've done on my server all my life until I installed Docker, but in this case I'm going back to my simple origins.
