"You can also see this as an ego versus soul conflict, because the dunya that lives inside us is the ego.
Ego consumes; soul creates. Ego takes; soul gives. Ego nurses wounds; soul lets go and heals. Ego gets defensive; soul seeks forgiveness and desires to repair. Ego demands individuality; soul thrives in relationality. Ego wants to take credit; soul enoses anonymity. (This is why the Sufis say that the last part of the Nafs or lower self to be effaced is the desire for recognition.)
This isn’t an easy shift in perspective. Modernity has so totally seeped into our worldview and way of doing things that it’s extremely difficult to disentangle ourselves from it, to decolonise our minds. Even people like us who aren’t from countries that were recently colonised by a foreign power have been mentally colonised, and this colonisation also lives in the body (until we evict it). You can call it capitalism, if you understand that not only as an economic system but also as a philosophy and even a religion."
