  3. St Mary's Old Church is a ruin just outside Dunvegan, here on the Isle of Skye. The church was built in 1694 - the date is inscribed on a stone over the north door - to replace an older medieval church that served as the parish church for the Duirinish region of N. Skye.

The original building was a simple rectangle, but a burial aisle was added in 1839. A 1735 burial enclosure with fine Renaissance carving stands against the west gable.

  5. Standing stones

We were built as a compass to the
    Stars and the sun
    The moon held us
    As the earth turned.
    We were raised in wildwood
    Times, when fires burned
    In hearts above.
    Standing still, prayers still
    Drip from us,
    We hold your knowledge
In the turning of the sun.

    A poem by Rachel Burch.

  6. #Dunvegan woods are full of colour and pattern in the #winter. They are also very atmospheric and an absolute pleasure to walk through. I rarely meet another soul there; even in the high tourist season. I have taken #photographs there at every time of year. I have no particular favourite. It’s the quality of the light and the place that makes it special anytime.

  8. The colours in the winter landscape are generally thought to be dull. Browns and greys. In reality the palette may be paler but the range of colours is not restricted. Look at this scene - yes, there are greys and browns but also velvet greens and pale golds and purples…

  9. “The forests of Skye and Raasay are set in a stirring landscape of jagged mountains, deeply indented sea lochs and gentle coastal fringes. They have trails for all energy levels, fabulous views and some of the islands' best places to see wildlife.”

Brodie is hardly wildlife. He’s wearing a navy blue quilted Barbour coat with a tartan lining and a corduroy collar.

  10. The Road to the Isles? No, a forestry road on an isle. A frequent walk for me and the dog. Lucky to have such open ways to take as a high road. Autumn skies put a spring in the step and a song in the heart.

  11. Cycling around #Skye - handlebar footage of roads from Broadford to Kilchrist, #Sligachan, down past the Fairy pools to #Glenbrittle - there's some complex 'passing places' choreography somewhat captured here. Then to #Dunvegan castle & onto #Portree

  12. Sunshine through the trees. This on the walk up the main road to the Castle. Summer is here.

These woods are on the Two Churches Walk which is very near Dunvegan

  14. Not Table Mountain but the Cuillins disappearing into the clouds. The village of Dunvegan in the foreground.

    Eilean uachdrach
a' Chuilithinn ghruamaich,
nan loch suaineach
mo luaidh's mo ghaol;'
('An Cuilithionn')
    'in the high island
of the grim Cuillin,
of the winding lochs,
my glory and my love.'

An excerpt from ‘TheCuillin’ by Sorley Maclean

  15. “Healabhal Mhòr is a hill in the north of the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It is also known as MacLeod's Table North, as it lies close the fellow flat-topped hill of Healabhal Bheag, or MacLeod's Table South.”

Here they are looking from the Duirinish Stone above Loch Dunvegan. These are the ‘Hills of Home’ to me now. This taken on Christmas Day. A fine day.
The clouds were ‘scudding’. The sun determined. The landscape subdued.

  16. Another fine place for a gentle weekend walk, the impressive 5 metre-high Duirinish standing stone overlooking Dunvegan... It's not as old as it may seem. Well, the rock itself is 🙂... But it's not been in place as long as long as you might imagine.

  18. There are very few gardens on the #isleofskye that are open to the public. The one at #dunvegancastle is spectacular. Several #waterfalls feed the #pools and #streams that run down to the sea. The range of #plants is wide and all are labelled. It’s not difficult to make a #composition like this where the greenery part frames the view of the water. Some palest white #Rhododendron carefully tended is in the foreground. #peace #tranquility and #joy abound. #Dunvegan #garden #skye

  19. Brodie is two years old today. Our #christmasdaywalk was ‘The Two Churches’ at #Dunvegan which features on the @walkhighlands website in the #isleofskye section. There was #sunshine, there were big beautiful #skies #forest and #moorlands. #photographs of those later but for now a #labradorretriever with a gold bow tie on the path. #dogsofmastodon #happyholidays
