We had a visitor in the bay this evening which has sailed from Horta Portugal apparently, the Kanoa. It’s Polish making this the first boat flying that flag I’ve seen here.

The moon continued to provide a pretty addition to the crisp midwinter mornings but the air quality near the horizon stopped me capturing the picture I really wanted with the moon touching the peak of Knockmealdown mountain as it set.
The iPhone’s AI ‘enhanced’ shot gives an idea of what it looked like earlier but despite trying both UV and polarizing filters I couldn’t bring out the moon nearer the horizon.
Happy enough with the attempt though.

Two quickly snapped poor pictures of the full moon setting over Dungarvan this morning. Hopefully I can get a much better version of this tomorrow.
I’ve lived here on and off for 50 years and this is the first time I realised this particular alignment ever happens. It more or less matches the extreme of the sun setting in midsummer but is a lot rarer because of the moon’s orbit and well, Irish skies and all that.

I finally managed to get a sort of clear shot of a Meadow Pipit today. I always hear them when I’m out on the Cunnigar but they really don’t like letting me get close enough photograph clearly. This turned out quite well.
I was not so lucky with the shots of bees, but there were hundreds, and many different species so it would be a shame not to include a few even if the shots aren’t great.
-
Some floral shots from today’s walk among the dunes.
Sea Campion
Samphire
Red Bartsia
Bindweed -
Some more of today’s insects, the ever present Six Spot Burnet moths of the Cunnigar, in some of its instars.
-
There were lots of butterflies around today but they weren’t too keen to play nice for the camera.

Ernest Walton died on 25 June 1995 in Belfast. Born in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, he was a physicist and Nobel laureate for his work with John Cockcroft with “atom-smashing” experiments done at Cambridge University in the early 1930s, and so became the first person in history to artificially split the atom.

Sunset over Dungarvan bay.

A few plants and flowers from my evening walk along the dunes.
The furze has now faded, giving way to the Hawthorne. But the elder flowers are getting ready to take over shortly.
Stonecrop is also starting to become more noticeable now, probably going to start flowering soon.
The final two are from my wildish back garden. There is a cluster of Red campion in one corner, and what I think is some sort of columbine that returns every year.
-
A female stonechat on some brambles and a female linnet on the rocky shore at the Cunnigar this evening.
-
And finally i had two fleeting observations of small, hamster sized brown furry mammals that darted across my path coming from one clump of dune grasses to hide in amongst a much denser cluster of dune grasses and furze. Not a rat, not a rabbit, and definitely not a mink or stoat.
It just might have been a bank vole.

And some of the flora and insects to wrap up.
Sea thrift, ranunculus, dog rose, and one of the burnet moths that are the most common insect by far on the Cunnigar.
-
Some of the fauna from the Cunnigar today.
The whimbrel was zipping away over the water after it saw me in the distance, they are quite skittish.
The thrush was busily hunting around for snails and other snacks, and mostly happy provided I kept my distance.
The stonechats and bullfinches were occupying the high ground all around chirping loudly making sure I didn’t get close.
-
A selection of early summer flowers from my walk on the Cunnigar today.
Sea Campion, Dog Rose, Hawthorn Blossom, and a Yellow Flag Iris.
-
The butterflies and moths have started to become more obvious this week.
I saw the first small blue butterflies and Burnett moths of the year on my walk today.
-
This extended sunny spell is starting to deliver some really nice sunsets.

Beautiful day at the beach yesterday, no wind, sunny, almost warm.
And we saw an "owl" 🦉 - kinda
-
3rd advent morning walk at the sea. Beautiful morning, freezing cold air, very little wind, warm sunshine, blue sky.
The scenery and shadows make the beach looking like a landscape on the moon :) -
