Watching the Duggar show, finally. Mostly vindicating because I've known what this shit was really about for a very long time. But also infuriating, esp when I saw Michelle Duggar deliver her 19th by c-section and have a miscarriage in her 20th pregnancy. Kristn du Mez notes that Amazon Prime's searching exposé of the Duggar family and Gothard's IBLP "Shiny Happy People" reached more viewers in its first 9 days than any Amazon docuseries. It also brought more new subscribers than any previous Amazon docuseries, more than 60% of those women, many in the 18-34 age demographic.

We'd like to think that this is an extreme, exotic strand of US Christianity, with its demand that women submit to men and its rigid gender roles. But it's far more normative than we want to see.
