I *finally* made the switch from #Google to #DuckDuckGo for search.

I have, for a long time now, only used Google (+ YouTube, etc) inside a Private/Incognito window, but it started to present captchas for every search because surely my behaviour (making Google track me a bit less) means I’m a bot.

DDG has worked just fine for me the last couple of days, so I won't be going back.

far as I can tell, most of us here on mastodon think google is evil

but is there a *real alternative ?

people often mention duck duck go, but far as I can tell, DDG is based on microsoft Bing, and MS is as bad, or almost as bad as G

given that a modern search engine has to cost enormous sums of money to setup and maintain, I don't see how one can have a truly indepedent search engine

I’ve added three new Duck.ai tools: a Spotlight-like quick chat switcher, a local, quick-pick prompt repository, and a keybindings cheat sheet.

All three are userscripts, so you can pick and choose what you want to use.

You can block the detritus from your searches. Sometimes I do want to know what the far right are saying, and I can search for that with Google, but the rest of the time I don't have to wade through the garbage.

最近、何かをオンライン上の英文を #Vivaldi :vivaldi_red: で読んでてわからない英単語が出てきたら

1. そのワードを選択してコンテクストメニューから「Web search」を選択
2. #Ecosia 🌳とか #DuckDuckGo 🦆の検索結果の言語を日本語縛りじゃないやつ（Ecosia だと"All regions" じゃないやつ）にしておくと冒頭に英英辞典の結果が出る（出ない場合も検索結果のほうにそういうサイトへの該当ワードのページが出る）のでそれを頑張って読む
3. 英英辞典の説明（英文）がどうしても分からないときは、その説明を翻訳かける

というのがルーチン化してきた。

複数語の熟語の場合もたどり着くのが英英辞典じゃないケースがある以外はだいたい同じ経路。

#Ecosia 🌳とか #DuckDuckGo 🦆は、検索結果ページに言語（検索結果で優先する言語）の切り替え UI があるので（Ecosia は "All regions" にしても日本語のページが上部に出てきたりして挙動が "？" な時もあるけど）楽に切り替えできるのと、
これらの検索エンジンは #Vivaldi :vivaldi_red: との提携関係があるので検索時に :vivaldi_red: の収益が生まれる（らしい）のも個人的にはポイント :tony_smirking:
