The Lago della Duchessa is another one of those surprising spots that nobody would suspect just an hour outside of Rome, Italy.
The lake, of glacial origin, is hidden away at 1788m.
The ascent is not easy – with an elevation gain of 860 meters, you should only attempt it if you have experience hiking mountains.
You will be rewarded with incredibly beautiful surroundings. May is the best time to visit, as the lake isn't frozen anymore, but also hasn't almost vaporized yet (as in the summer most water will disappear).
