  1. "No more talk" - Dubstar

Steve Hillier had written much of this song ten years earlier, while still at school. He's since written about writing the song.

Two CD singles: one with live versions of tracks from "Disgraceful", one with "Unchained monologue" which might be the group's best b-side.

    Song of the episode, surely.

  2. #Despair is so seductive sometimes. Once I give up, I enter a sort of trance and don’t have to try anymore. That’s what I’m on the edge of in my work today. As #Dubstar once sang:
    “We'll take our hearts outside,
    Leave our lives behind
and watch the stars go out.”

I need to pull this back somehow.

  3. I'm not familiar with this song but got to love a song that talks about making a cup of tea #Dubstar #TOTP

  4. [This guest post was written by @satsuma about number 976 on The List. The album was also submitted by satsuma.]

I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this album. It was a rainy November night and I was in Edinburgh for a work trip, eating on my own in a tiny Mexican restaurant. I was halfway through the Strawberry Margarita that I had ordered with my food when I noticed the music that was playing – somewhere between shoe gaze and electro-pop, sung in a gorgeously pure West Yorkshire accent by vocalist Sarah Blackwood.

Each track brought something new to the mix, but it was the penultimate song that absolutely floored me – an outstanding cover version of “St Swithin’s Day” by Billy Bragg that almost brought me to tears, followed by the title track that tipped me over the edge.

I think the waiting staff in the restaurant must have been fans because the CD started playing over again, so I ordered another drink and settled down to listen for a second time. I think a third drink and a generous tip may have happened after that too. I bought the cassette tape the next day to listen to on the train home.

[Alt text for accompanying image: The album cover artwork is a round photo of the top of an open zippered pencil case, made of blue furry fabric with something looking like fake pink lips (or, perhaps, labia) inside. Surrounding the photo are drawing of pink flowers on a blue background, with a pink border on the edge of the cover. The band name is in yellow font at the top centre, and the album name in smaller font at the bottom centre.]

  5. @mbd 'Token' became my all-time favourite Dubstar song. They tried HARD to make it happen and failed, but it was a #1 in my heart. Sweet Dreams Are Made Like A Motorway.

I saw #Client live, met Sarah later and promised her not to ask about #Dubstar. She was like "you better not!" Steve Hillier now calls their last two albums "solo projects of Chris and Sarah." Might be a drop of bad blood there. ;)

  6. My ranking of Dubstar's albums from best to worst:
    Disgraceful
    One
    Two
    Goodbye
    Make It Better

(For the record, none of their albums are bad, but the first two are definitely my favourites, LOL!) 😃😍🤣💖💙👍

  7. #Dubstar are good, aren't they? Didn't pay enough attention to them in the 90s, as I thought they were a bit soft/twee/dancey (read: toxic masculinity). Same with Saint Etienne: brilliant.

  8. CW: Spotify

I don’t actually use Spotify enough for the Wrapped thing to be useful, but this year I have mostly been listening to #MyChemicalRomance (yes, yes, I know), #NoahFinnce, #Yungblud, #Chvrches, #BabyQueen, #Pinkshift, #Dubstar, #Placebo and - for some reason - mid90s trance. Non-algorithmic recommendations along these lines welcome!

  9. I came here to escape an evil empire, yet another evil empire has been tracking my musical movements. #Dubstar #Propaganda #TheBlueNile #Blancmange #PetShopBoys #ManicStreetPreachers #DepecheMode #SelfEsteem

Not decrying the Manics' entry in my chart, but I did make a point of listening to every one of their albums in release order for a podcast

  10. Anyway, when I'm not ranting at #COVID19 and the stupid humans conspiring to kill us all, or ruin our lives anyway, I've launched a new #music blog. Here I rant about heavy metal, pop music and, eventually, Karen Carpenter.

For now, however, I gush over #Dubstar, its 1995 album #Disgraceful, and #Ninja fanny.
