  1. Meanwhile in the far right WhatsApp groups today. This group created by Antony Boyle.

They are at least planning to arrive at the city west tonight as well.

  2. @ColmDonoghue @harriettmb

I think the #DublinRiots have likely shifted the view on Ireland’s #FarRight. Up till now, this kind of madness and property destruction has been treated with a little more than a shrug. I imagine this torching will be investigated with more vigor

  3. 14) #Wired with the story on how American #FarRight figures are amplifying their fringe counterparts in #Ireland

Just as #Stalin and #Lenin encouraged global communist revolution through the #Comiterm, we now have #ElonMusk and #Putin stoking a #Fascisterm aimed at undermining western democracies

Ireland is a plaything for these #garchs

  4. @Becksy

There is certainly #FarRight agitation at play with the #DublinRiots.

But would rioting have happened if the no way demagogues’ agitation gad been directed at rich tech companies based in #Dublin

Some are just driven by the opportunity for “agro”

  5. #EU #Ireland #DublinRiots #DSA #BigTech #ContentModeration #SocialMedia: "Under the DSA, tech firms also have to provide data to law enforcement authorities if requested, so they can track who is posting the content even if they’re anonymous (typically IP addresses are captured or metadata is available).

In some cases, police forces will ask tech platforms to leave potentially illegal content in place so they can establish a proper chain of evidence.

However, part of the three-and four-way discussions in the 24 hours following the riots looked at one particular issue: the lack of Irish-speaking content moderators working for X, TikTok and Google/YouTube." rte.ie/news/ireland/2023/1203/

  6. 13) Looking at the landscape of #SocialProblems in #Ireland, lack of affordable housing may be one of the triggering items for the #DublinRiots.

Let me be clear, not everyone struggling with the #IrishHousingCrisis riots, but it is likely one of the fault lines used by #FarRight agitators to trigger violence especially when tied to #migration pressures

The #IrishTimes has an excellent article ⬇️ on those whose housing circumstances are challenging

  7. 12) There is no unitary explanation for last week’s #DublinRiots. Those who participated in violence had a reasons peculiar to their own experience. Much as we may wish for singular explanations, solutions to the street rage will likely be manifold, if there is enough courage to look at the event without bias and simplistic prejudice.

Let’s stipulate that the rioters did not participate motivated out of satisfaction with their current life situation.

  8. I've been staying around Dublin 1 near where the riots happened recently.

Walking around the streets, you can feel the tension and see the lack of investment in the community and public space.

Hearing Irish politicians refuse to acknowledge the systemic failures, and instead dismiss working people as "scumbags" and "thugs", I wanted to write and share some thoughts:

  9. Kneejerk govt responses to #DublinRiots include introducing facial recognition technology against advice of human rights & civil liberties orgs. This is deeply problematic and biased technology. You can sign the @ICCLtweet petition against FRT here iccl.ie/i-do-not-consent-to-fr

  10. TBT This week started by attending an ICTU vigil outside the GPO against the far right rioters of a week ago. This week 13 years ago I was similarly outside the GPO protesting austerity, the cuts, and the Government. It was alternately crisply bright and slushy miserable weather. The guards were out in force in front of the Department of the Taoiseach despite the lack of trouble. #TBT #ThrowBackThursday #Ireland2010 #Austerity #TheTroika #IMF #EC #ECB #TheCrash #Dublin #DublinRiots #Mastodaoine

  11. Did you say you need yet another reason to help someone you love disengage from #twitter?

Not that there is any shortage of reasons, but if you come across someone unclear on why this would be a good idea, maybe show them this.

  12. This is brilliant. Read all of it, right to the end.

"We need a calm and measured assessment of policing after the riots."

  14. This is a very interesting take by Fintan O'Toole on the historical context of the recent riot in Dublin. I am not knowledgeable on the subject so I'd be interested on what others, better informed than me, make of his analysis.

  17. 11) Excellent piece from Fintan O’Toole on the #DublinRiots.

FOT rightly insists on complexity, reminds us #Irish of some other ugly #FarRight #DublinRiot history and does not mince words in calling those who stoked the violence what they truly are: #Fascist

#Fascists are “malignant narcissists” who will exploit any opportunity to further their cancerous goals. Marxists or migrants are simply grist for their mill, a quest for recognition and relevance
