Dublin's Natural History Museum, nicknamed the Dead Zoo, holds actual specimens from Darwin's voyage on the Beagle in its collection. The National Museum of Archaeology has Iron Age bog bodies so well preserved you can see their expressions, tucked inside cylinders that are shockingly easy to walk right past (we did, twice). All completely free.

Maynooth is 45 min from Dublin city by commuter rail and might be my favorite photowalk in the country: an ivy-covered university campus, a ruined castle, and fields of wildflowers, all walkable from the station.

Howth on the DART gets you cliff walks and a ferry to Ireland's Eye for birding.
