The Allman Brothers Band, Eat a Peach, 1972 on Capricorn
Third studio album from the Allman Brothers Band, with a mixture of live and studio recordings, including some from the Fillmore East performances in 1971. Released after Duane Allman died in a motorcycle crash in Macon Georgia. The extended “Mountain Jam” is spread across two sides, B and D.
The song “One Way Out” is actually by Elmore James and Sonny Boy Williamson – I didn’t even know that was its actual title (“‘Cause there’s a man down there, might be your man I don’t know.”).
Famous cover by W. David Powell and J.F. Holmes from Wonder Graphics out of Georgia – with no album title appearing on the cover (apparently it was still being decided upon when the graphics were finalized).
My copy via Vinyl Destination (RIP) in Lowell, MA.

The Allman Brothers Band
November 4, 1969 ~ The debut album from The Allman Brothers Band is released. Legendary rock writer Lester Bangs called the album "consistently ... subtle, and honest, and moving," describing the band as "a white group who've transcended their schooling to produce a volatile blues-rock sound of pure energy, inspiration and love." #theallmanbrothersband #60srock #classicrock #70smusic #blues #bluesrock #dickeybetts #duaneallman #gregallman…

The prompt is Idle
The Allman Brothers Band, “Idlewild South” 1970The #AllmanBrothers' second album was reissued with their first eponymous album as the double album Beginnings after their bar-raising live album “At Fillmore East” and the popular success of “Eat a Peach.”
I know what you’re thinking: #SouthernRock, rednecks with guitars, but while they arguably launched that genre, let’s remember their jazzy, dare I say, #JamBand side, and two drummers - TWO DRUMMERS - that drove songs like pile drivers, not to mention #GreggAllman's world-worn vocals and those two lead guitars. OK, the guitar thing became a southern rock cliche, but when you have musician's musician #DuaneAllman on slide, it’s a whole different animal.
Tragedy and excess would reduce the band to a less adventurous shadow of its former self, but their first two albums are a gumbo of #BluesRock weight, instrumental finesse, southern soul, and inspiration.

I was never an Allman Brothers fan. I went through an At Fillmore East phase the way most guitar players do. I was a huge fan of Duane Allman’s playing on Derek and the Dominoes Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album and at some point I needed more and that brought me to At Fillmore East. Duane Allman’s playing is other worldly on that record. In between the stratospheric heroics there were the moments featuring the other guy. That other guy is Dickey Betts. When you step back and look at it closely, his playing is just as good as Allman’s. Maybe not equal (because that’s asking too much from a normal human), but close enough.
On top of being a fantastic lead player, he wrote some incredible songs. “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” is pretty much perfect. I spent a lot of time in my youth sitting in front of my cassette player trying to figure out how to play that song. Just picking up what I could. It’s a twin lead guitar instrumental that to my ear is closer to Fusion than Southern Rock. I’d play along for a while, then stare at the speakers, slack jawed, when Duane’s solos came up, then I’d play along with Dickey’s solos.
Outside of that record though, I never really had much use for The Allman Brothers. Southern Rock as a genre has its moments but generally speaking it wasn’t for me. Respect where respect is due though. Dickey Betts as a song writer, guitarist, and singer is deserving of all of the respect.
He passed away this morning at age 80. Rest in Peace, Dickey Betts. Everyone go give At Fillmore East a spin in his memory.

#StevenHyden is a music journalist who writes mostly for Uproxx,
His podcast (Celebration Rock?) or he was on another podcast and they discussed how #EricClapton was nothing more than a sideman at best. Biggest example was bringing #DuaneAllman in to work on Layla and how without him Clapton never would have finished the album. Does anyone remember what episode this was or have a link?(Yes, I have tried extensive searching and even asked Steven on X, but no luck so far.)

Hot off the presses, my latest. If I could include 'Bell Bottom Blues' like 10 times in my Daily Records playlist, I would

The only "#afterlife" I'd ever be interested in would include a small, smoky comedy club where I could catch a triple-bill and hang out with #LennyBruce, #RichardPryor and #GeorgeCarlin. Serious bonus points if the house band is led by #DuaneAllman.
