#WordWeavers Day 25: What part of your antagonists’ personalities makes them so antagonistic?
For Delphine LaLaurie, in "Bayou Fire," it's the attitude that she should always get what she wants.

#WordWeavers Day 23: What comforts your antagonists?
For Stephanus, it's the idea of revenge on anyone who has ever looked down on him or denied him something he wants. Especially when what he wants is Drusilla.

14 What's the most challenging thing about writing characters of a different sex/gender from your own?
I sometimes have to call in a consult, to be honest. When I was writing "Bayou Fire," I had my husband read a scene in which Amos, my male MC, gets pissed off at a remark made by another character during a rather fancy black-tie event. I have him sit down his drink on a nearby table, turn to the person, and slowly say "What did you just say?"
Mr. Husband said that this is exactly what every guy he knows would have done.
So, you need to be ready and willing to ask someone whether you got it right.

#WordWeavers Day 13 - If your MC had to make dinner for some close friends, what would they cook?
I put this kind of stuff in my books all the time; food is one of the ways we carry culture. In my WIP, Scotsman Dair Montgomery brings homemade cock-a-leekie soup to Raylene Thibodeaux.

What is your SC likely to take away from a painful experience? It really depends on the book. In "Pompeii Fire," Claudia is the main secondary character. She's a fairly traditional young woman in the ancient Roman period. However, when a long-wished for event takes place and doesn't turn out as she hoped, she still figures out a way to gain some satisfaction. To say more is to deliver spoilers.

#PennedPossibilities 330 — How does your MC go about expressing or not expressing their sexuality?
Suetonius, like many gladiators, is pimped out by his lanista -- and he's very popular with the clients. When he falls hard for Drusilla, his experience is translated into tenderness.

5/30 — Are you comfortable writing from the POV of a child? Written any?One of my characters in "In The Eye of The Storm" and "Through the Opera Glass," Clarice, is a child when we first encounter her, and a teenager later on. I admit that she was rather like me as a kid, bookish and rather serious. I found it easy to take some of my childhood experiences and translate them to her life during and after WWII.

#PennedPossibilities 320 — What was the worst event of your MC's childhood?
Drusilla's father leaves her, at age 6, to be fostered by Julia Felix in Pompeii. She's lost her mother in the 62 AD earthquake, and now her father's disappearing as well -- because he doesn't want to be hampered by a little girl while he establishes a new business (and life) in nearby, wealthy Herculaneum. Drusilla's only companion for the moment is Invictus, her puppy ... but she becomes friends with Julia's daughter Claudia. Still, she's effectively orphaned for convenience.

#WordWeavers 20: How did you settle on your antagonists' appearances?
In "Pompeii Fire," my antagonist is an actual, documented person: Stephanus, the fuller. Now, he may have been the nicest guy in town for all any of us know ... but not in my book. He's way older than my female protagonist (he's her father's age), and wants to marry her. He's not particularly good-looking, and he's always trying to hide that his hair is thinning. But the worst part of him really is his odious personality.

How did you settle on your MC's appearance?I often have a good idea of what they look like ... but sometimes it's more vague. I use storyboarding to help me consolidate who they are so that I can translate that a little better. Pinterest is super-handy for this.

#WritersCoffeeClub #19Feb Do you give your characters mannerisms? How do you do this?
Absolutely. When Amos Boudreaux ("Bayou Fire") is stressed about something, he runs his fingers through his hair ... which is unruly to begin with!
