  1. As feared, the "PCIe x4" slot on this DS413 board is a fake! A fraud! A muontebank!

    It looks like one PCIe channel is wired directly to the Marvell SATA controller, which then uses the "x4" slot to connect the serial lines and power for four SATA drives to the drive backplane in a nice, neat fashion (that is unfortunately also useless to me).

    It also, rather nicely actually, prevents powerup if a real PCIe card is inserted so I haven't blown my x1900 up.

    Check that BIOS from 2013!

    This *does* seem to bode ill for the "x4" PCI-e slot, which is probably just passing SATA lines back to the onboard disk controller, since its ID matches the Marvell catalog for the 88SX7042 PCIe 4-port SATA-II controller...

    But you know I'mma try to put something in that slot anyhow!
    And even if it's a no-go, I've still got a cool, _silent_, dual-core PowerPC box here.

    To wit, I have enabled UART pins on my Raspberry Pi 3b and have successfully sent characters back and forth to the Pi itself.

    Next step: connect to the DS413 and prevent it from booting automatically into the installed DSM version, whatever that may be.

    After that I have to get NetBSD set up on its tiny Flash, but how hard can that be? >_>

    To wit, I have enabled UART pins on my Raspberry Pi 3b and have successfully sent characters back and forth to the Pi itself.

    Next step: connect to the DS413 and prevent it from booting automatically into the installed DSM version, whatever that may be.
