  1. Trees in extreme drought in Germany

    Forests around the world are increasingly under stress caused by drought as a result of climate change. Even in 2008 and 2009 #ClimateChange had already impacted growth trends in forest trees : based on 44 studies of temperate and boreal #forests Sergeant et al have shown that already in 2008, many EU forests showed negative growth trends, whereas before growth trends were stable. The good news is that drought tolerant species were less impacted.

  3. @DavidSD yes. Very interesting paper : #droughtstress and #barkbeetles caused in 2018-2020 a strong tree mortality and thus a widespread #ForestDisturbance across Central Europe. The authors observed post-disturbance regeneration in nearly 900 plots across 10 countries : the good news: recovery was robust. The bad news : 75% of the regenerating seedlings are projected to be **outside of their climatic niche** by the end of the century under even moderate #climatechange (RCP4.5)
    This suggests to me that "leaving forests alone" is not the best way to adapt them to #ClimateChange. There is just not sufficient local #Biodiversity

    Hello, I'm completely new to Mastodon. I'm a scientist, so I thought a server about scientific communication would be interesting. I'm a plant physiologist, more specifically a forest tree ecophysiologist, working on how trees acclimate to #DroughtStress, and generally interested in the effect of #ClimateChange on #Forests .
