🚨 The state’s rolling out the terrorism label again — this time for a noise demo outside an ICE detention center in Texas. No, seriously.

On July 4th, 10 anti-ICE protesters were arrested outside the Prairieland facility in Alvarado. And now the pigs and their bootlicker allies in the right-wing media are spinning it into some fantasy about domestic terrorism — the usual fear-mongering to justify locking people up for standing with migrants.

Bail is set at $10 million each — a fucking obscene number that makes it clear this isn't about justice. It's about sending a message: “Resist ICE, and we'll bury you.”

And look, as someone who’s been labeled a “terrorist” just for making media, I know damn well how useful that label is to the state and fascists alike. It doesn’t just ruin lives — it disappears people. These comrades are now facing charges that carry 10 years to life. For what? The abuse of process application alleged RCMP used excessive force while arresting the accused in November 2021, and that the group was treated unfairly while in custody. It asked the judge to stay the criminal contempt of court charges or to reduce their sentences based on their treatment by police.

Tammen said it would be inappropriate to stay court proceedings, but found that some of the accused's Section 7 rights— life, liberty, and security of person — were breached during the police raid.

Tammen said these rights were breached when several police officers on two different audio recordings were captured comparing Sleydo' and Sampson to orcs and ogres for wearing red hand prints painted over their mouths — a symbol that represents missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

About 2,000 people, many from the publishing industry, signed a letter in support of the demonstrators. Though the Scotiabank subsidiary has been gradually reducing its stake in Elbit Systems, it still holds a disproportionate amount compared to other Canadian banks, and the Giller Prize spent much of 2024 facing pushback over its ties to the bank.

More than three dozen eligible authors withdrew their latest books for consideration for the 2024 Giller Prize. Alongside eight past nominees and winners, they called on the Giller Foundation in July to cut ties with numerous other organizations “who are directly invested in Israel’s occupation of Palestine.” Prize juror Dinaw Mengestu said that day that he would leave the jury.

#HBCU students, faculty, and community activists have joined forces to stop the environmentally destructive police training facility.

"#Environmental activists have long raised concerns about 'Cop City' due to its potential #ecological impact. The facility is slated to be built in the #WeelauneeForest (South River), a tract of undeveloped #forested land that serves as an essential #GreenSpace and #CarbonSink for the city. Activists say losing this green space would contribute to increased #AirPollution, decreased #biodiversity, and the exacerbation of #ClimateChange.

"Along with concern about the environmental impact, opposition to 'Cop City' from the #Black community also stems from fears of racial profiling, over-policing, and strained police-community relations. Critics argue that the allocated funds should be redirected to address systemic issues affecting Black residents, such as education and community development, rather than expanding policing resources."

How do we make better mistakes each time?

I’ve been thinking about that a lot the past three weeks, having thrown myself, side by side with so many hundreds of others, into solidarity efforts for the now-codefendants in Atlanta—people caught up in the fascistic state repression against @defendATLforest and #StopCopCity.

For many who have dropped everything to voluntarily, tirelessly, and exhaustedly throw themselves in various jail, court, legal, logistical, and other support roles to #FreeThemAll, this isn’t their first time at doing antirepression work. They’ve gone through the hell—as defendants and/or supporters, inside and outside courtrooms, jails, and prisons—in other brutal crackdowns on our beautiful resistance, from the Green scare and RNC Welcoming Committee, to J20 and Standing Rock, to more recently, the George Floyd uprising and Line 3.

There’s so much collective wisdom, collective strength, and collective defense in our toolbox to fight the charges, with the aim, always, of #DropTheCharges while sustaining our movements. Yet the dynamics that can tear us apart inside our circles—whipped up, manipulated, and cruelly exacerbated by the state—are sometimes the hardest, and way too predictable or familiar; here, often our tools are rusty or underutilized, or get lost in the mess of all else we have to do.

This time, maybe due to the wealth of solidarity experience and multigenerational co-learning, or usually invisible longtime work of feministic+queer care-focused anarchists, or many big hearts converging, the mistakes are better. Or rather, we are doing better at “early intervention” and “harm reduction” to grapple with past mistakes in order to lessen them.

For example, having volunteer “on call” therapists to hold space for processing trauma and grief, rather than letting it build up, boil over, and burn us. Setting up care clinics, supporters for support crews, weeks of resilience, and umpteenth other acts of compassion that try harder to leave no one behind, and stave off the ways that stress and fear can divide us.

There’s a long road ahead, but we’re starting on better footing, better mistakes and all.
