  1. RE: chaos.social/@Zwiebeltuete/116

#Germany wants to make getting a #drivingLicence cheaper and easier - currently DE has thorough #DriverEducation, with required classroom theory lessons, more complex theory exam than in UK and compulsory special drives in particular conditions (such as at night, on motorway)

New plans are closer to how its done in #UK and other #European nations (they also allow private practice on L plates which was previously verboten) and claim to "reduce bureaucracy and costs" on #DrivingSchools - but it seems quite rushed and sudden, and ironically many folk in UK are lobbying for our #driver training to be closer to German practice! (such as introducing the drives in special conditions)

BTW Cost of learning to drive in UK is reaching equivalent of 3000€ for todays learners

  6. A while back an #environment activist on here (alas, their toot disappeared in timeline) was trying to work out how many people in UK regularly #drive - it is hard to get accurate data!

There are about 34 million private #cars in UK of 42 million #vehicles including #vans, #lorries, #buses, #motorcyles and anything else that needs registration mark from #DVLA GB or #DVA NI

About 43 million people in GB (excluding NI) hold a full #DrivingLicence - but not reliable data for number of drivers as these records include people who have died or emigrated!

And some folk own more than one #vehicle, others have a licence but don't drive - I'd guess at figure for private car drivers being around 25-30 million, but levels of #motoring will vary wildly between regions

  10. This is the resulting #Court case - appears #driver did pull over 100m away and return to the scene of the #collision but its not clear when or how the authorities were able to identify him or whether he later handed himself in (he's not being separately charged with failing to stop, which would have happened if they had to look for him)

The #cyclist has recovered from his #injuries

Seems that #driver was also a bit of an #oldtimer and his health and #eyesight wasn't the best, he has since handed in his #DrivingLicence to DVLA.

His son and daughter own a #RollsRoyce dealership across the border in #Essex, which is likely how he acquired this unusual vehicle..

  15. What do youse think about the #Graduated #DrivingLicence ? I keep seeing calls for this in #Britain - usually from bereaved #parents who have lost #teenage / #YoungAdult offspring in road traffic #collisions

I'm conflicted about the concept (and govt has 0 plans to introduce it) -it would make things difficult for both young #UK
citizens and new UK arrivals in #Health and #SocialCare who often have to drive at night/with passengers, and enforcement would require a lot of resources / #surveillance

Might as well just deploy more Roads Policing and neighbourhood officers to enforce existing laws - in my youth there was often a bobby around who would have words with the leadfooted and/or those who don't correctly maintain their #vehicles which did act as some deterrent.. #RoadSafety

  17. I'm not surprised #UK government is not planning #GDL (graduated #DrivingLicence ) - although well intentioned, many young #drivers would be in exemption categories (parents, working long hours in health/social care or hospitality), it would require further extensive #surveillance to audit them (and could push them towards supporting "car-friendly" ReformUK) - what is needed instead is better #RoadSafety #education and more effective roads policing in #rural areas..
