  1. Now just to get a straight hem… (the back is already pinned up a finger length to match the front panel)

Might check if the parents are home/up for a visit this weekend to get a pair of pinning hands called “mum”

    No I don’t have a mannequin 😅

  2. I lied! I did have time to set the sleeves in!

(Well I sacrificed a reasonable bed time. It’s fine, I’m chilling on PTA until the end of the week)

Just the bottom hem to turn and fell, two cords to braid for the cinching on the sides and some fraying edges of seams (sleeves and the questionable decisions of pocket nr 1) to hide tomorrow.

  3. Now that the hams are resurfaced, time to continue the actual dress.

Sleeve time! I was hoping to construct both sleeves and insert them into the dress, but my decision to have nice no fray insides…

It’s dinner time and I have one sleeve completed and another sleeve in progress, with a lot of manual turning and felling left to do.

  4. Pockets and french seams were a worse combination than the loops and the french seams. Had to undo/redo the first side three times, and the stitches are nearly impossible to see on this fabric.

Of well, the sides are stitched together. Tomorrow there’s the pockets to close (and figuring out a way to deal with the fraying), shoulders to stitch together and starting the sleeves.

Did not manage to go to bed at a normal time. (It’s 00:30 right now)

  5. Managed to insert the side loops in french seams right in the first improvised attempt (well, can you spot the little mistake that I decided not to fix in the picture with the loops? 😅).

Proved to myself once again that sewing/clothes construction is mostly doable using some logic and common sense.

  6. This afternoon it took me 3 hours to do most of (not quite all) the cutting out for a dress. I'd never make it through on #sewingbee!

Admittedly it's stripes, so I had to cut out the pieces individually rather than in pairs, but still.

  7. Today was real fabric cutting day! Had to do some freestyle Tetris, because the layouts in the pattern booklet were all for fabrics either way narrower or just a bit wider.

But we’re okay, and I have a little over 1,5m left for either fuckups or a zero waste skirt/petticoat.

  8. Putting in de sleeves did solve the issue of the darts looking a bit too low, but I think I’ll make them 1 cm longer in the real dress. They should be a bit more towards the center I think.

The cinching (not in pattern) that I added on both sides also works well, so that’s a keeper.

Now I’ll have to wait for more dress work until tomorrow, because I only realised I still needed to wash the black linen I want to use like an hour ago 🤦‍♀️. (It’s in the machine now)

  9. Baby’s first bust darts.

Have to put the sleeves in (again… sigh) to see if it really works as well as I think it does.

Meanwhile contemplating french seaming (funnily enough called engelse 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 naad in Dutch) the real dress when I get to it, because the fraying on the long first dress (with zigzagged edges) is already driving me nuts.

  10. Sleeves in, shoulders approved, boob apexes marked. Time for deconstruction and drafting the front panel bust adjustment.

  11. Finally done!

I think this is the most complex dress I’ve ever made, in that it consists of a figure hugging top with slim sleeves, a skirt made out of six panels and most notably two very deep pockets (I managed to put a 2l cola bottle into one!).

I’ve made skirts with pockets before, but this is the first dress and I’ll say that I didn’t exactly enjoy the experience of sewing them in, and that there are things I could have done better, but for the time being they are still going to be quite nice.

Length-wise it goes to my calves, with is a pretty good length for a long skirt, since it should reduce the danger of stepping on it when walking up stairs, while still being long enough to keep my legs warm, especially when combined with leg-warmers.

Lastly it matches the design with one of my shorter dresses, so I can even do the thing where I wear the short one during the day and then switch to this one in the night without changing looks.
    😊

  12. @retech @ifixcoinops

I'm thinking about installing #openBSD on a laptop and would like suggestions as to what one wears whilst attempting such a thing. #Debretts and #manpages both lacking in guidance. Help me fediverse, you're my only hope.

  13. I find it quite depressing. Products like this which were engineered (Swiss) to an incredibly high standard in the 1960s and will probably keep working long after anything being sold new today (Chinese) even though it's already about 50 years old.
Even the styling is still pretty chic IMHO.

And it's almost being given away because we are inured to #shinythings

[Postscript: I have my mum's one in a cupboard almost identical to this]
