Ugh! #DreamHost just notified me that they're going to install #WordPress 7.0 on my site, which comes with "AI features."
I'm hoping these won't get in my way if I just treat my blog as a static website from now on.

New agents.txt file found on DreamHost
DreamHost now adds a default agents.txt (similar to robots.txt) to hosted websites that discourages LLM training and agent actions and allows on-the-fly access. On the downside, they added it to existing sites without notice, and used a proposed spec that's already changed.https://journal.kvibber.com/2026/05/agents-txt-on-dreamhost/

Do you have any PHP projects running on Dreamhost? If you haven't checked in on them in a while, *HEADS UP!*
Dreamhost may be charging you $5/month if your website is on an unsupported PHP version. That’s anything below 8.2.
PHP 8.5 Active Support
PHP 8.4 Active Support
PHP 8.3 Security Updates only
PHP 8.2 Security Updates onlyTry to update your PHP to at least 8.4 so you get active support, and your developers can do *even more awesome things*

So part of my backup from #DreamHost was apparently missing and now I'm manually downloading the missing content over SFTP. I'm seeing a lot of content that's obviously not from Blind Access Journal. Let's just say there's a lot of files about luxury handbags and other things we've never discussed or written about... Hmm.

Last night was the final straw for me. I finally kicked #DreamHost to the curb because, every time I log in to their panel, I find new accessibility barriers. I switched to #InMotion. They're a lot better but also far from perfect on #accessibility so my verdict isn't out yet. Stay tuned.

I can't find an advertised security contact for #dreamhost anywhere. Do I know anyone? -
Today is a day of #freedom for me. I am migrating from Google Workspace to #dreamhost! In 2010 I got a free Google Apps account for 10 users, which they rebranded as G-Suite. But then they ditched that brand to call it Google Workspaces and in so doing did the switch of their bait and switch act, charging us a per user fee. I had to delete a bunch of users. Now as noted I will be free of google workspaces.
I'm reading #Enshittification by @pluralistic which makes me even happier that I am quitting Google Workspaces.
I've also switched default web browser on iPhone to Duck Duck Go, and on Mac I'm using https://kagi.com

So now I've moved on to looking at #DreamHost, which again looks to be about $150/year for unlimited sites (after the discounted first year)… and.. they DO support #IPv6 🎉
But I’m not sure if they are the best provider for what I want to do.
And honestly I’m again wondering about static sites from #TypePad.
Anyway… the good news is that I have all my sites in WP .com right now and so I can export from there into a file that can be imported into any other #WordPress hosting provider.

Hm, looks like #Dreamhost is having some issues.

Get a #DreamHost support rep
Them: Hi, my name is David! I’ll be happy to assist you. Let me read your initial question and get caught up
me: Wait, you can’t be David. My name is David. There can be only one
them: *Crickets*
Completely unacceptable customer support experience

I received an "important email" from #Dreamhost about my domain registration. You'd think that #email security would be paramount for them.
They have no DKIM setting, so it's impossible to see if the email was tampered with in transit and if it was sent by the claimed sender. And, their DMARC policy is p=none, which tells email providers, "don't do anything special if you can't verify me".
Their dreamhostregistry.com domain is wide open for spoofing because they've configured it to be wide open for spoofing.
How can a web hosting company be so lax about email security? How can I trust emails they send to me if I have no assurance they sent it, and it wasn't modified in transit?

#Dreamhost updated some of my #VPS instances, and overwrote each user's
.bashrcfile. That explains why things aren't working properly. At least they could have make a backup copy before overriding it... ugh. -
Sometimes, I feel like #Dreamhost has become the #GoDaddy of shared webhosting. I wonder what they're doing to block AI scraper bots, because robots.txt is a joke.

My website went down a couple of days ago. Apparently Dreamhost had moved my VPS which broke my custom Python installation’s reference to the system ssl module. Reinstalling my Python version (and re-creating my site’s virtual environment) fixed it.

I searched #DreamHost’s help section for “Ghost”
I want to try dabbling with it (https://ghost.org) since I already have my own web hosting.
Of course, the Knowledge Base section displays some ding dong #AI assistant that “analyzes my query” for a sec
Then the one help doc it returns is: “Gaining access to accounts of the deceased”
😆

Does anyone know if it's possible to install #Pixelfed on #Dreamhost?
-
While I’m moaning: the #dreamhost web UI has a file manager app. I can see all my hosted files in it. But, from an iPad browser window, I cannot get a url for one of the files so I can link to it.
Again, for the purpose of adding pictures to forum posts on small forums that can’t afford to host photos.
Annoying.

Last night I tried to install a newer version of python on my VPS, and `make install` kept hammering my RAM and hanging. This is on Dreamhost’s cheapest, 1GB ram VPS plan.
I finally got it to work by stopping the gunicorn service running my site for the duration of the install.
I wish I knew enough to know a better way to safeguard against this in the future.

Okay, #Dreamhost, why are you advertising that I can buy `.club` TLD domains -- even SUGGESTING them --but when I try to, you block it like this? What gives?

Ran into a support contact form that disallows special characters like the apostrophe and quotes.
This is a #DreamHost form with a subject + body format. If I try typing a ‘ or “ anywhere in either, I get the error in my screenshot and can’t send the form. Even a simple contraction like “don’t” triggers it.
Is this a new thing? Are special characters a threat to IT infrastructure now?
Also bonus points: Screenshot of one type of spam I’ve had for the last 3 weeks. I get 20-50 of these a day.

@tante Apparently his gaze has turned towards #DreamHost. Per the subreddit, the .org site has apparently removed all mentions.

Nobody cares, but also switched email providers in the process.
Apparently some time in the past 5 years #Dreamhost decided to retire forwarding from mailbox addresses. It's either this or that. This is a dealbreaker given how slowly Gmail checks POP3 mailboxes— to force any owned domain outliers to the paid tier…
Quite happy about my experience with ForwardEmail.com so far. No web client, but very affordable & capable if you dare to skip the convenience of the big-tech free email providers.

I woke up this morning to discover #DreamHost has literally deleted 40 of my websites, including my personal portfolio. Brilliant. All the files are just ... gone. They claim they’re restoring from backup but no real updates over the past 9 hours. No explanation of the cause—or how they plan to prevent similar future outages. What a mess. Zero stars. Do not recommend.
