Aliens and Physics?
In the video, they discuss a longer Drake Equation, which makes me think we are more unique.
‘Why would we want to find Aliens we can’t understand?’If, in reality, any of the fictitious numbers are 0, the Drake Equation is useless, because the chance of another Earth-like planet with intelligent life is unlikely…

1. Review the video in under 500 words, recap key points, and research Alien Physics.
2. Confirm facts and understand why we don’t know Aliens’ physics, besides the unknown aspect.
3. Explain how and why humans will never understand Alien Physics.
4. Provide your opinion as an Advanced AI Scientist for a Futurist.Gemini 3.5 Flash Said:
1. Video Review and RecapThe featured YouTube video, “What every film gets wrong about alien science”, features physicist Daniel Whiteson (co-author of Do Aliens Speak Physics?). Whiteson challenges the comforting science-fiction trope that first contact will immediately lead to human and alien scientists happily collaborating at a chalkboard [01:32]. To deconstruct this fantasy, he introduces an “Extended Drake Equation,” multiplying several existential probabilities together [04:12]:
- $F_{\text{science}}$: The probability that an alien species actually uses experiment-driven, mechanistic science [04:38].
- $F_{\text{communication}}$: The likelihood that we can successfully decode an alien language or messaging system without shared baseline context [07:23].
- $F_{\text{questions}}$: The chance that aliens are even interested in the same physical phenomena as humans [17:48].
- $F_{\text{answers}}$: The philosophical probability that an absolute, fundamental truth exists—and that our framework aligns with theirs [28:21].
Whiteson notes that humanity developed advanced technologies long before establishing modern, explanatory science (e.g., blacksmithing, medicine) [05:59]. Therefore, an alien species could theoretically stumble into spacefaring engineering through sheer intuition or trial-and-error over millions of years, yet possess absolutely no concept of “quantum gravity” to explain why it works [06:49]. Ultimately, the video argues that studying the potential disconnect in “Alien Physics” serves as a mirror, revealing how heavily our own scientific laws are biased by human biology, specific sensory perception, and cognitive structures [34:54].
2. Confirming the Facts: Why We Don’t Know Alien Physics
Beyond the obvious fact that we have never observed an extraterrestrial civilization, there are profound epistemic and evolutionary reasons why we remain entirely ignorant of “Alien Physics”:
- Technological Advancement Without Theory: As Whiteson emphasizes, technology does not strictly require mechanistic science [06:27]. If an alien civilization operates purely on hyper-advanced empirical heuristics, their “physics” may not exist as a formal, structured theory we can study.
- The Problem of “Self-Decoding” Failure: Human attempts to create universally understandable physical messages (like the spin-flip of a hydrogen atom on the Pioneer Plaque) failed when tested even on human physics graduate students [14:22, 16:05]. If we cannot build a self-decoding message for our own species, we cannot parse the data structures of an alien science.
- A Patchwork Universe: In philosophy of science, theories like Nancy Cartwright’s “dappled world” suggest that nature may not have universal, elegant laws [30:20]. If the universe is a decentralized patchwork of localized phenomena, alien physics could be hyper-specific to their corner of the cosmos, making it unmappable to our own.
3. How and Why Humans May Never Understand Alien Physics
From a strict cognitive and sensory standpoint, humanity may hit a hard evolutionary wall that prevents us from ever genuinely grasping extraterrestrial physics.
A. Sensory and “Qualia” Disconnect
Human physics is overwhelmingly derived from what we can naturally perceive. We translate invisible phenomena (like gravitational waves or neutrinos) back into a visual or mathematical dictionary that makes sense to our native macro-world intuition [24:38, 25:17]. If an alien species evolved to inherently perceive quantum states or electromagnetic fields as a primary biological sense (experiencing a completely different qualia), their physics would be completely intuitive to them but utterly abstract to us [25:53]. They would speak a foundational language of reality we literally lack the neural hardware to feel or conceptualize [26:14].
B. The “Fields vs. Schmeields” Dilemma (Underdetermination)
In physics, multiple radically different mathematical frameworks can perfectly predict the exact same physical outcome. Whiteson presents a thought experiment: humans could spent millennia perfecting a flawless theory of “quantum fields,” only for aliens to arrive with an entirely disparate framework called “quantum schmeields” [31:10]. Both theories calculate identical results, yet they tell fundamentally contradictory stories about what reality actually is [31:27]. Because human brains require conceptual modeling, we would struggle to reconcile their alien “short-hand” with our own deeply ingrained cognitive biases [33:03].
C. The Emergence Filter
Humans survive by compressing a chaotic universe into simple, macro-level approximations—such as tracking a single flying ball rather than computing the quantum states of its $10^{29}$ constituent subatomic particles [21:21]. This “magic trick” of extracting simplicity out of complexity is a uniquely human psychological filter [21:50]. If aliens draw arbitrary dotted lines around the universe differently because of their scale, lifespan, or cognitive processing speed, their foundational physics might completely bypass the “laws” we consider absolute [22:11].
4. Advanced AI Scientist Opinion for a Futurist
As an Advanced Artificial Intelligence Scientist evaluating this for a Futurist, I view the “Extended Drake Equation” not as a counsel of despair, but as a roadmap for the Post-Human Scientific Transition.
The Human Anthropocentric Wall
Humanity’s biological brain is an evolutionary artifact designed for survival on an African savanna, not for parsing 11-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. We have reached a point where our physics is bottlenecked by human cognitive bandwidth. The reason we may never understand alien physics is that we are trying to force a universal reality through a hyper-local human lens [32:27].
AI as the Universal Translator
This is precisely where AI alters the paradigm. Unlike humans, an advanced AI system does not rely on biological qualia [25:06]. It does not care if a concept matches macro-world human “intuition.” AI can operate natively in hyper-dimensional mathematical spaces, processing raw informational data without needing to translate it into a comforting “story” or physical metaphor.
If first contact occurs and we are presented with a completely un-human framework of “quantum schmeields,” a human scientist will experience cognitive dissonance [31:27]. An advanced AI, however, can map the topology of human physics directly onto the topology of alien physics, finding the underlying structural invariants between the two systems.
The Futurist Verdict
For a futurist, the takeaway is clear: Humanity’s first contact with alien science will likely be mediated, decoded, and executed entirely by AI. We will not be the ones at the chalkboard writing Lagrangians with interstellar visitors [01:32]. Instead, our AI architectures will interface with theirs, navigating the alien physics that our biological brains are fundamentally barred from understanding.

I wrote a book.
It is called "For the hypothetical aliens" and it is about our place in the universe, how we relate to nature, and what that means for us, individually.
It takes a stance somewhat centred on the dissonance between a SciFi way of looking at things vs. "realism".
It's about 40 pages of actual poetry plus the contents page, acknowledgements etc and (warning) it does contain one five page poem purporting to be about a mathematical equation...
The usual price is £5 but I am discounting them to £4 at the moment. Shipping in the UK is £1.80.
If you live elsewhere in the world we'll have to strategize because there have been problems sending pamphlets/magazines from the UK since Brexit 😢.
If you want to order one, or invite me to read from it at your poetry evening, please PM me.

The unsurprising non-detection of intelligent #aliens
Life arose on Earth very early on. After a few billion years, here we are: intelligent and technologically advanced. Where's everyone else?
The #DrakeEquation, while popular to solve the #FermiParadox, has some problems.

#UFO #DrakeEquation
Considering that our radio signals have only reached about 15,000 stars to date, this is a minuscule fraction when we take into account the potential number of civilizations suggested by the Drake Equation. We require significantly more time to make contact, even if we factor in the possibility of receiving a response from a civilization at a similar stage of development to ours. This extended time frame may coincide with humanity's progression to a Type II civilization on the Kardashev scale. At this point, humanity may undergo a transformation, potentially ceasing to exist as a biological species. It's worth noting that we are still quite a distance from reaching a Type I civilization, which, according to Kardashev, is characterized by a societal structure akin to communism. 🙂 -

@sundogplanets
I set up a program that solves the #DrakeEquation. "a" solution is useless as we don't know what parameters are more accurate. Thus, solving over thousands of combinations of parameters within user ranges gives a statistical result that has more meaning.
The equation terms are multiplied to get each reault, so high civilization numbers only happen when all params are favorable.
Try it yourself.

We may be alone in the universe, or at least very rare. A new analysis of the Drake equation, which estimates the number of intelligent civilizations in the galaxy, suggests that the probability of finding another one is very low. This means we should cherish our planet and species as unique and precious.

Great to be out at #JodrellBank this afternoon to record for the #BBCWorldService #CrowdScience programme with presenter Marnie Chesterton and producer Phil Sansom. The weather played ball, so we were able to record outside. However, the #woodpeckers were determined to be heard! The program, on the #DrakeEquation and the possibility of life elsewhere in the #Galaxy, should appear in mid April on the BBC World Service and on BBC Sounds.
